Where?Where would you do what happens next? Again we have easy questions - at least on the surface. The decision is given, just not the place where the decision will be executed. All you have to do is decide the place where the decision will be carried out. Be exact about the place. We give our version of the answers elsewhere, but be honest and make up your own mind. Two of the answers may not be all that easy or all that clear. Important: ALL of these situations are entirely fictitious. The characters are real, the situations fictitious. That means that they did not occur! None of them occurred! The Laws of the Gasme are on our site - The Laws of the Game are on our site. To find those concerned with the scrum, http://www.planet-rugby.com/Laws_And_Referees/story_263.shtml 1. Mat Rogers of Australia chips. The ball bounces high seven metres in from touch. Rogers and Lawrence Dallaglio of England leap for the ball. Dallaglio punches the ball into touch. You award a penalty. Where? 2. Five metres in from touch George Gregan passes the ball straight back to Stephen Larkham in his own in-goal. Richard Hill of England puts pressure on Larkham who then runs across behind his goal-line with Hill in pursuit and Mike Catt approaching. When he gets just beyond his goal posts he dots down. You order a five-metre scrum. Where? 3. Jonny Wilkinson, 7 metres inside his own half and 17 metres from touch kicks downfield. After he has kicked George Smith tackles him. The ball bounces 24 metres from the Australian line and six metres in from touch. It bounces ahead and goes into touch 21 metres from the Australian line. You penalise Smith for the late tackle. England have the option of a penalty where Smith tackled Wilkinson and one further down the field. Where would the place of the further option be? 4. On his 10-metre line, Stephen Larkham is deep from a scrum and kicks a high kick down towards the England 22. Lote Tuqiri in the wing is a metre ahead of Larkham, when he kicks, i.e. nine metres inside his half, and eight metres in from touch. Immediately Tuqiri chases the ball and challenges Josh Lewsey as he catches it 27 metres from his line and 18 metres from touch. You penalise Tuqiri and give England the option of a scrum where Larkham kicked the ball or a penalty. Where would the penalty be? 5. Stephen Larkham of Australia kicks diagonally for his wing Lote Tuqiri. After Larkham has kicked, Neil Back of England tackles him late. The kick is badly judged and flies over the dead-ball line, seven metres from touch-in-goal. You penalise Back and give Australia the option of penalties for the late tackle. One option is where Larkham kicked the ball. Where is the other option? 6. Stirling Mortlock of Australia dives over in the corner for a try. After his extravagant drive Lawrence Dallaglio of England drives into him, knees first. You penalise Dallaglio. Where will the penalty be? 7. England throw in at a line-out. Martin Johnson at No.2 in the line-out catches the ball and holds it to form a maul. Before the maul has moved the whole Australian back-line, stretching across the field, comes up level with the back of the maul. You penalise the Australian backs for being off-side. Where will the penalty be? 8. Steve Thompson, England's hooker does not go down in the scrum when you call engage. You award a free kick against England. George Gregan wants to take the tap kick. Where is he allowed to take the kick? 9. Jonny Wilkinson of England drops for goal. It is a poor kick and ends up stopping in the Australian in-goal. Mat Rogers dots down. He picks up the ball as Ben Cohen of England approaches. Rogers throws the ball in Cohen's face. You decide to penalise Rogers. Where will the penalty be? 10. Stirling Mortlock of Australia gets a pass on the run. In trying to catch the ball, 27 metres from the England line, he knocks it forward. He knocks it forward again, 21 metres from the England line. the ball hits the ground about 16 metres from the England line. You award a scrum. Where? |
