Law changes

After an hiatus - a busy hiatus with all the frantic rugby around the world - we are back with our little tests. This one is to test your knowledge of the law changes which came into effect in June 2004.

The teams involved are the Kalahari Farm Implements and the French Cheeses.

In each case there is a multiple choice answer. In some cases the choice is tiny.

All you have to do is pick the one which you think is right. When you have done all ten, then you check your answers.

Of course, you won't cheat. Referees never cheat, and if you do this time, the only person cheated will be yourself.

It's easy. A referee should get 10/10.

1. You send Bull Dozer, the Kalahari Farm Implements prop, off the field - red card to a Bull. They bring on a substitute prop, Rhyno Forecliff. Forecliff is then injured. They have no other prop.

You will

a. let Dozer back
b. order uncontested scrums
c. abandon the game.

2. Koos Hoe, the Kalahari Farm Implements flyhalf, kicks the ball down into the French Cheeses in-goal area where fullback Pierre Bree goes for the ball which is bouncing high, as Andries Sythe bears down on him. Realising that he could be beaten to the ball or drop it, Bree leaps high and punches the ball backwards over the dead-ball line.

You will

a. order a drop-out
b. order a five-metre scrum
c. award a five-metre penalty.

3.  Koos Hoe, the Kalahari Farm Implements flyhalf, kicks the ball down into the French Cheeses in-goal area where fullback Pierre Bree goes for the ball which is bouncing high about three metres from touch-in-goal, as Andries Sythe bears down on him. Realising that he could be beaten to the ball or drop it, Bree leaps high and punches the ball backwards over the touch-in-goal line.

You will

a. order a drop-out
b. order a five-metre scrum, five metres from touch
c. order a five-metre scrum, 15 metres from touch
d. award a five-metre penalty, five metres from touch
e. award a five-metre penalty, 15 metres from touch.

4. Scores are close. To restart the match after the Kalahari Farm Implements have scored a try, Guy Camembert, the French Cheeses flyhalf runs up quickly with the ball and kicks off about eight metres from the touch-line and hares after the ball.

You will

a. have the French Cheeses kick off again
b. give the Kalahari Farm Implements the option of a kick again or a scrum where Camembert kicked off
c. give the Kalahari Farm Implements the option of a kick again or a scrum in the middle of the half-way line
d. let play go on.

5. Scores are close. To restart the match after the Kalahari Farm Implements have scored a try, Guy Camembert, the French Cheeses flyhalf runs up quickly with the ball and kicks off about eight metres on his side of the middle of the half-way line and hares after the ball.

You will

a. have the French Cheeses kick off again
b. give the Kalahari Farm Implements the option of a kick again or a scrum in the middle of the half-way line
c. let play go on.

6. The French Cheeses are to drop out. Guy Camembert, the French Cheeses flyhalf, runs up quickly, puts the ball on the ground, taps it over the line with his foot, picks up and starts running.

You will

a. have the French Cheeses drop out again
b. give the Kalahari Farm Implements the option of a kick again or a scrum in the middle of the 22-metre line
c. give the Kalahari Farm Implements the option of a kick again or a scrum where Camembert tapped the ball.
d. let play go on.

7. In terms of the Laws, you can have a tackle without a tackler.

This statement is

a. true
b. false

8. Strong Jacques Rockerfought of the French Cheeses barges for the line. Quick Kat Draadkar dives at him from behind, grabs his lower legs and is still holding his lower legs when they both crash to the ground, Draadkar behind Rockerfought. Rockerfought places the ball behind his body. Up leaps Draadkar. On his feet, he bends down and picks up the ball and throws it over Rockerfought's body to his scrumhalf.

You will

a. penalise Draadkar
b. let play go on.

9. Strong Jacques Rockerfought of the French Cheeses barges for the line. Quick Kat Draadkar grabs his ankle from behind and is still holding his ankle when Rockerfought crashes to the ground, Draadkar behind Rockerfought. Rockerfought places the ball behind his body. Draadkar, still on his feet, bends down and picks up the ball and throws it over Rockerfought's body to his scrumhalf.

You will

a. penalise Draadkar
b. let play go on.

10. The Kalahari Farm Implements are to throw in at a line-out. They line-up with five players. Their tall lock Toring Windpomp stands out of the line-out as the receiver, where the scrumhalf often stands.

As Piston Harrow, the hooker, throws in, Windpomp steps into the line-out, pushes Olivier Cantal, the French Cheeses  lock, out of the way and jumps for the ball, which he catches.

You will

a. penalise Windpomp where he pushes Cantal
b. penalise Windpomp 15 metres from touch along the line of touch
c. penalise Windpomp 15 metres from touch and ten metres closer to his goal-line.
