Bits of this and that

Little Laws test

The teams playing this time are the Ozzie Predators and the Gaelic Grubs. It is the final of the Galaxy Cup played at the Field of Mars and being broadcast to the universe via satellite.

You are the referee whose decision will bounce from star to star. All you have to do is look at the incidents and then choose which of the suggested decisions you think to be the right one.

Suggested answers are provided but do the whole thing - honestly - first and then see if you agree with the answers.

1. It is twenty minutes into the match when, as a line-out is to take place, the Gaelic Grubs protest that the Ozzie Predators have 16 players. You stop the match, count the players and indeed they have 16 players.

You call the Ozzie Predators captain, Fenno Mozzie, and tell him he will have to remove a player. He does so.

You then restart the match with

a. a line-out
b. a scrum, 15 metres in from touch
c. a penalty, 15 metres in from touch
d. a free kick 15 metres in from touch.

2. Geraint Larvabredd, the Gaelic Grubs prop, is injured and replaced by Lyr Sowdebredd. Then Sowdebredd is injured and Larvabred returns, telling the referee that he is able to play and would like to do so because his team has no more props.

You will

a. allow Larvabredd to play.
b. not allow Larvabredd to play

3. Outback Dingo, the Ozzie Predators flank, is substituted in the second half. Tiger Beatle comes on in his place. Bluddy Leach, the Ozzie Predators scrumhalf, goes off for a blood injury, Outback Dingo comes on to take his place.

You will

a. allow Dingo back on
b. not allow Dingo back on

4. Thorny Devel, the Ozzie Predators flyhalf, knocks on. He goes after the ball and knocks on again. Red Focks, his inside centre, also tries to pick up the ball but knocks on. Welchie Rebbit, the Gaelic Grubs flank, gets the ball.

You will

a. wait for advantage.
b. blow immediately and award a scrum.

5. Eirwyn Faggots, the Gaelic Grubs inside centre breaks with the ball in both hands. He brushes against the referee. The ball also brushes the referee. There is no Ozzie Predators player nearby.

You will

a. stop play and award a scrum to Gaelic Grubs
b. let play go on.

6. Eirwyn Faggots, the Gaelic Grubs inside centre breaks back inside. As he does so he runs towards you. You back away and into Commin Fligh, the Ozzie Predators flank, thus preventing Fligh from getting to Faggots who charges for the line.

You will

a. stop play and award a scrum to Gaelic Grubs
b. stop play and award a scrum to Ozzie Predators
c. let play go on.

7. You penalise Ozzie Predators. Berwyn Cowell, the Gaelic Grubs flyhalf, places the ball for the kick at goal. It is a long kick, 45 metres from the posts, in front of them. The ball rises high and then dips. Standing just in front of the crossbar is tall Willy Warsp, the Ozzie Predators lock. As the ball dips and before it can cross the crossbar, Warsp leaps high and catches the ball cleanly. He lands and starts to run.

You will

a. let play go on
b. award a five-metre scrum to Gaelic Grubs
c. award a five-metre penalty to Gaelic Grubs
d. award a penalty to Gaelic Grubs 45 metres from the Ozzie Predators line
e. award a penalty 35 metres from the Ozzie Predators line.

8. The Gaelic Grubs score a try just inside the corner post. Berwyn Cowell, their kicker, places the ball for the conversion. It is a windy day and while he stands, Jenkins-like, gazing at the posts, the wind blows the ball off the tee and onto the touch-line.

You will

a. allow Caul to replace the ball
b. disallow the kick.

9. There is a maul. Commin Fligh, the Ozzie Predators flank, charges into the maul, right shoulder first, arm and hand turned away across his body towards his left shoulder. His right shoulder makes contact with the back of Iain Fadge, the Gaelic Grubs prop.

You will

a. let play go on
b. penalise Fligh
c. stop play and award a scrum

10. Berwyn Cowell, the Gaelic Grubs flyhalf, seven metres from touch, kicks downfield. After he has kicked, Commin Fligh, the Ozzie Predators flank, tackles him. The ball alights 23 metres downfield and four metres from touch. It rolls another seven metres and goes into touch.

You penalise Fligh and offer the Gaelic Grubs the option of a penalty where Cowell kicked the ball or a penalty

a. 23 metres downfield, four metres from touch
b. 30 metres downfield, four metres from touch
c. 23 metres downfield, 15 metres from touch
d. 30 metres downfield, 15 metres from touch
