Baa-baas fall to Scotland in Aberbeen

Scots run in five tries at Pittodrie Stadium

Frank Hadden's chances of landing the Scotland job on a full-time basis were done the power of good as his team swept aside the Barbarians 38-7 in Aberdeen on Tuesday evening.

The national team embarked on a new era in great fashion by running in five tries, with man-of-the-match Andrew Henderson, Dougie Hall, Rory Lamont, Allan Jacobsen and Hugo Southwell all crossing the black and white line.

Fullback Chris Paterson also put the disappointment at missing out on the British and Irish Lions tour behind him by kicking 13 points.

Edinburgh boss Hadden, who was handed temporary charge following the sacking of Matt Williams, named a new-look team following player retirements and with key men missing.

The Barbarians, who were led out by former Scotland scrum-half Bryan Redpath in his final game in the country, had a great chance to score an eighth-minute try but South African AJ Venter unusually spilled the ball with men in support.

But they quickly paid the price three minutes later when the much-changed Scots snatched the lead.

Glasgow's Henderson went through the tackle of Wales' Darren Morris and was allowed to cross the line with great ease, to give Paterson the easiest of kicks to convert.

But the Baa-Baas hit back in the 25th minute when Andrea Lo Cicero charged over the try-line and touched down through a number of bodies, and David Humphreys levelled the scores.

Scotland were without their Lions stars, but scrum-half Mike Blair caught the eye in the match in the absence of New Zealand-bound Chris Cusiter.

Paterson put the home side ahead at the interval with a penalty from under the posts after the all-stars were penalised for offside.

The Barbarians were frustrated by handling errors and wayward passes, but they introduced former Scotland wing Kenny Logan for his farewell in the 48th minute.

Edinburgh prop Jacobsen was looking to make up for lost time having been ruled out of the RBS Six Six Nations Championship through injury and he went on a strong charge moments later, only to be let down by a lack of support.

Hadden made two changes in the 54th minute when he brought on uncapped prop Euan Murray and Edinburgh hooker Hall in place of Scott Lawson and Jacobsen.

Scotland thought they had grabbed their second try of the night moments later when Marcus di Rollo put the ball down over the line, but referee Nigel Owens stunned the 20,228 home crowd, the best at Pittodrie this season, by ruling it out for a knock-on.

Hall scored a brilliant try in the 66th minute after great vision from Mike Blair.

The Edinburgh man did well to send the youngster over the line after a well-constructed passing move, with Paterson once again converting from tight to the touchline.

The night got even better for Hadden and the Tartan Army in the 70th minute when Dan Parks sent Lamont over after more good play by Blair, before another Paterson conversion.

Logan's emotional night came to a disappointing end when he hobbled off with an injury late on, but this was all about the new Scotland revolution and Jacobsen secured a historic victory for the new coaching regime with a further touchdown, which Paterson again converted.

Southwell weighed in with a last-minute try after great work from Craig Hamilton and the impressive Lamont, with Paterson completing a 100 percent kicking record by nailing another conversion.

Scotland will now go into the international game in Romania full of confidence, and Hadden will know that another similar performance could secure him the job on a permanent basis.
