Hadden happy with Scotland's showing
Tuesday May 24 2005
'This win was important for Scottish rugby'
Scotland interim coach Frank Hadden refused to discuss his prospects of landing the job on a full-time basis despite his side's historic 38-7 win over the Barbarians at Pittodrie. The national side embarked on a new era in some style under Hadden's stewardship after he took over following the sacking of Matt Williams. Hadden has only been initially appointed for games against the Barbarians and Romania but looked to have had an immediate impact. But despite Scotland's first ever victory over the Barbarians, he said: "All I am thinking about is going on holiday, that's as far as I'm looking at moment." However, Hadden knows if his side can produce a similar performance and result against the Romanians on June 5 he would make it almost impossible for the Scottish Rugby Union not to hand him the position on a full-time basis. "There's only one game to go," he added. "You will have to ask the players how much they enjoyed winning tonight. "It was important for Scottish rugby. We accept that the Barbarians are not the most organised side but they had a phenomenal amount of talent out there. "I am delighted with the result but everyone is so aware that it is so vital to win in Romania. We had a good look at them and they are no mugs at all. "We will prepare for that game but we have beaten the Barbarians for the first ever time. We will try and claim a major scalp and win for the second time in Romania." Scotland recorded five tries from man-of-the-match Andrew Henderson, Dougie Hall, Rory Lamont, Allan Jacobsen and Hugo Southwell. Reliable full-back Chris Paterson also put the disappointment at missing out on the British and Irish Lions behind him by kicking 13 points. And Hadden had nothing but much praise for his new-look side, who were without their Lions stars and recently-retired internationals. He concluded: "The enthusiasm the players have shown this week has deserved an outstanding result and Scotland's first ever win against the Barbarians."
