Giteau at fly-half pleases Jones
Thursday December 02 2004
Dywer commits to one thing
Barbarians coach Bob Dwyer was willing to commit to one thing ahead of the Barbarians match against the All Blacks on Saturday, and that was that Wallaby star Matt Giteau would be starting the game at fly-half.
The current golden boy of Australian rugby has played the majority of his rugby - for the Wallabies and the ACT Brumbies - at inside centre alongside veteran pivot Stephen Larkham. And while Giteau himself isn't worried which jumper he pulls over his head, Wallaby coach Eddie Jones will be keen to see how the young Aussie does against the ABs this weekend. Described by the Wallaby coach as "one of the best players in the world at this stage", Giteau is seen as the likely replacement to Larkham in the Wallaby No.10, despite Jones not readily committing to the fact. But Giteau stressed that he is happy where he is for the moment. "I don't have a preference. I don't mind either fly-half or centre. I enjoy playing either position and if Justin Marshall goes down I might even have to slip into half-back," said Giteau. "I am also enjoying playing inside centre and I am learning a lot." And the Brumbies star, who played a leading role in the Wallabies victory over England last week, looking forward to turning out for the Baa-baas, a team traditionally know to play risky, open rugby. "We are expecting an open, attacking game. There is a lot of tradition surrounding the way the Barbarians play so I am really excited about playing," he said. "Some of their tries have been fantastic in the past and that is something I want to be a part of. Even at the end of a long hard season and with my friends back home in Oz telling me it is 39 degrees Celsius, I still want to be here." Giteau will be in familiar company with the Wallabies providing the bulk of the squad, among them League-convert Lote Tuqiri, currently regarded as one of the finest wings in the world. And the big winger was looking to pick up a Twickenham double. "I am still feeling the bruises from the game on Saturday but I'm also still on a bit of a high from the win against England - you don't come away from Twickenham with a win that often," said Tuqiri. "Hopefully, we can come away from Twickenham again this weekend with another win. "This is my first time playing for the team. It is an honour. You grow up watching the game and the Barbarians are something that is very traditional in the game. I snapped up the opportunity to pull on a Barbarians shirt as soon as they asked me. "We have a star-studded squad in my opinion including one of the best players in the world at the moment in Schalk Burger so you can't complain. Hopefully we can play a little bit like the original dream team on the weekend."
