Condors under attack from Lobos
Friday October 29 2004
Copa Intercontinental on offer
The Condors of Chile play the Lobos of Portugal in Santiago on Saturday, part of the Intercontinental Cup tournament involving Chile, Georgia, Portugal and Uruguay. Chile see this as an opportunity to prepare for the 2007 World Cup qualifiers when they will start joining with Paraguay and, probably Brazil. The Chilean team is made up only of players playing in Chile and has two uncapped players - Matías Alvarez, a 21-year-old prop from Universidad Católica 21 years old prop, who was born in France of Chileans and only this year came to Chile, and strong No.8 Felipe Carvacho of the Universidad de Antofagasta. Chile's Argentinian coach Jorge Navesi chose a squad of 28 players for the tournament, but did not include those who were playing abroad, such as Nicolás Arancibia (Parramatta, Australia) and Sergio Valdés (Métro-Racing, France). "We don't know much about Portugal. But we know that is important to have a good line-out and scrum to get possession of the ball. And we have to improve our defense and tackling," Navesi said. The math will be played at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago. The Chilean squad: Cristián Iga (Alumni), Claudio Bennett (Alumni), Benjamín Echeverría (Cobs), Rodrigo Coda (Cobs), Tomás Olave (Cobs), Cristóbal Berti (Los Troncos), Alejandro Tocigl (Old Boys), Cristóbal Westenenck (Old Boys), Matías Vergara (Old Boys), Francisco Cruz (Old Macks), Santiago Zolezzi (Old Macks), Patricio Desmond (Old Macks), Cristián Onetto (Old Reds), Pablo Llorens (PWCC), Cristopher Brown (PWCC), Aldo Jiménez (Sporting), Felipe Del Campo (Stade Francais), Luis Pavez (Stade Francais), Nicolás Contreras (Stade Francais), Felipe Carvacho (Universidad Antofagasta), Sebastián García (Universidad Austral), Felipe Ilanes (Universidad Católica), Jorge Pizarro (Universidad Católica), Matías Alvarez (Universidad Católica), Paul Marsalli (Universidad Católica), Sebastián Pizarro (Universidad Católica), Errol Jouannet (Universidad Diego Portales), Hugo Pérez ( Universidad Austral). Referee: Javier Mancuso (Argentina) Gullivers Sports Travel offers the best value supporters' tours to Six Nations matches, the Dubai Sevens, Rugby World Cup Sevens and, the summit of rugby, the British & Irish Lions' Tour to New Zealand.
