Portugal choose for South America

CONSUR/FIRA-AER tournament

The Portuguese coach, Tomaz Morais, has named his squad for its trip to Chile and Uruguay to take part in a tournament organised CONSUR (the South American rugby body) and FIRA-AER of Europe.

They will be playing for the Copa Intercontinental, a new rugby trophy and competition. Georgia will join in the tournament.

Portugal play Chile at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago on 30 October and Uruguay in Montevideo the week afterwards.

The captain is experienced Antonio Cunha. Gonçalo Malheiro and David Penalva are the only players playing outside of Portugal.

Portugal go to Chile and Uruguay as the holders of the European Cup of Nations, popularly known as the Six Nations B, after going through last season unbeaten.

After the relegation of Spain, Portugal are now the only country left in that group who were not part of the Eastern bloc. The others are Romania, Georgia, Russia, Czech Republic and newly promoted Ukraine.

In a warm-up match Chile beat Cuyo, the Argentinian province based on Mendoza, 37-34 on Sunday. The week before they beat a Santiago XV 36-13.
