Flatman's Payne is Wasps prop's gain
Monday May 31 2004
Tindall and Christophers in doubt
London Wasps prop Tim Payne has been called up to the England squad to tour New Zealand and Australia to act as cover for injured Bath frontranker David Flatman. The 25-year-old Payne has made 21 appearances for the European and English champions since signing with Wasps from Cardiff. Coach Clive Woodward revealed that Flatman would be travelling with the England squad but said that Flatman had not yet fully recovered from an achilles tendon injury. Sale hooker Andy Titterrell, who damaged his cheekbone in Saturday's Wildcard final against Leicester, has also been given the all-clear to travel. Joining Flatman on the injured list are Bath team-mate Mike Tindall and Leeds Tykes star Phil Christophers - both of whom will undergo fitness tests on Monday. "They're the only two we're checking on - we should go as selected," said Woodward. England depart for New Zealand on Wednesday. The England squad: Stuart Abbott (London Wasps), Olly Barkley (Bath), Steve Borthwick (Bath), Mike Catt (Bath), Phil Christophers (Leeds Tykes), Ben Cohen (Northampton Saints), Martin Corry (Leicester Tigers), Lawrence Dallaglio (London Wasps), Matt Dawson (Northampton Saints), Harry Ellis (Leicester Tigers), David Flatman (Bath), Andy Gomarsall (Gloucester), Danny Grewcock (Bath), Richard Hill (Saracens), Charlie Hodgson (Sale Sharks), Chris Jones (Sale Sharks), Josh Lewsey (London Wasps), Michael Lipman (Bath), Tim Payne (London Wasps), Mark Regan (Leeds Tykes), Simon Shaw (London Wasps), James Simpson-Daniel (Gloucester), Matt Stevens (Bath), Steve Thompson (Northampton Saints), Mike Tindall (Bath), Andy Titterrell (Sale Sharks), Tom Voyce (London Wasps), Fraser Waters (London Wasps), Julian White (Leicester Tigers), Trevor Woodman (Gloucester), Joe Worsley (London Wasps). |
