Woodward spells out his tour intentions
Thursday June 03 2004
'We are not going there to get marks out of 10'
England coach Sir Clive Woodward has spoken of his expectations ahead of his side's tour of Australasia, declaring that he is determined to come away with some wins. But Woodward also admitted that England need to improve on their recent displays should they wish to hang on to their tag of "No.1". "We are not going there to get marks out of 10, it's a serious business - we're there to win," said Woodward. "We've been a little bit off the pace recently and we've got to learn from that and we've got to improve significantly on our performances against Ireland and France. "I don't think it takes a lot of talking about - we just want to go down there and win." Woodward added that the trip was an excellent opportunity for many of the younger players to stake their claim for a regular place in the team. "If they can front up in Dunedin and Auckland it's a great opportunity for them," he said. "We're the No.1 team in the world - and we hold the World Cup - and we don't want to go down there and get beaten. "It's a short, very intense trip and we're determined to do well." England face the All Blacks twice - in Dunedin on June 12, and in Auckland on June 19 - before flying on to Australia where they will encounter their fellow 2003 Rugby World Cup finalists in Brisbane on June 26. |
