Sir Clive bloods the youngsters

Sir Clive Woodward gives 'unknowns' a chance to 'step up'

England coach Clive Woodward has named an untested 26-man squad for the team's match against the Barbarians in the final match of the Staffware Challenge Tour at Twickenham on Sunday.

Sir Clive Woodward: Looking pensive

Woodward was forced to await the result of the Heineken Cup Final clash between London Wasps and Toulouse on Sunday before naming his squad because the result would have an effect on player availability.

The result of the match would determine which team's would take part in the Zurich Premiership Wildcard Final and therefore have an effect on which team's could release their players for the Baa-baas clash.

As it was, Wasps won the match and it meant Leicester Tigers and Sale Sharks will now do battle on Saturday for the final England spot in the Heineken Cup next season.

Wasps and Bath are, of course, unable to release any players because of their participation in the Zurich Premiership Final on the same day.

Gloucester, meanwhile, automatically qualify for the tournament and Woodward has used the opportunity to name seven players from the 'Cherry and Whites' in the squad.

The remainder of the squad is made up of Newcastle Falcons players and members of the England squad selected for the Churchill Cup tour to Canada.

"In selecting the side to play the Barbarians I have not, apart from Mark Regan, chosen players going on the summer tour," explained Woodward.

"This offers many of the Churchill Cup players a huge opportunity to impress, such as Hugh Vyvyan, Dan Scarbrough and Jamie Noon.

"Players such as Clive Stuart-Smith and Marcel Garvey, who are taking part in the Under-21 world championships next month, will also have a chance to step up to the mark.

"Selection for Sevens was given priority and of course players from the four Zurich Premiership clubs playing on Saturday could not be considered for Sunday's game."

England squad: Alex Brown (Gloucester), Peter Buxton (Gloucester), Mark Cornwell (Gloucester), Jon Dawson (NEC Harlequins), Chris Fortey (Gloucester), Marcel Garvey, (Gloucester), Jonny Goodridge (Gloucester), Andy Hazell (Gloucester), Michael Horak (London Irish), Dan Hyde (Leeds Tykes), Darren Fox (Northampton Saints), Nick Lloyd (Saracens), Tom May (Newcastle Falcons), Robbie Morris (Northampton Saints), Jamie Noon (Newcastle Falcons), Mark Regan (Leeds Tykes), Dan Richmond (Northampton Saints), Paul Sackey (London Irish), Dan Scarbrough (Leeds Tykes), Kevin Sorrell (Saracens), Michael Stephenson (Newcastle Falcons), Clive Stuart-Smith (Leeds Tykes), Hugh Vyvyan (Newcastle Falcons), Dave Walder (Newcastle Falcons), Nick Walshe (Sale Sharks), Mike Worsley (NEC Harlequins).
