V/d Westhuyzen answers the critics
Saturday November 27 2004
Fly-half relieved to have cleared frustration
Springbok fly-half Jaco van der Westhuyzen took aim at his critics on Saturday after the Bok fly-half starred in the team's 45-10 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield. Van der Westhuyzen came in for mass criticism ahead of the Test match with cries for the Brent Russell to replace him in the Bok No.10 jersey. But the former Blue Bulls and Leicester Tigers star weighed in with a man-of-the-match performance capping it off with the final try as the Boks bounced back from the defeat by England in style. "It is always good to be on the winning side and we played particularly well in the first half today," said Van der Westhuyzen. "We silenced our critics back home and this, hopefully, showed we can play. "We worked on the conditions this week and it paid off. Percy Montgomery and myself played the guys in at the back today which is what the forwards needed today. "All the frustration came out with that try so I was very happy with that." But the Boks will not be totally happy with a performance that was marred by two yellow cards for locks Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha and a number of penalties for ill-discipline. Coach Jake White admitted that is was cause for concern and something that would be looked at and rectified in the future. "It is a concern," said White. "But at least it is not for dirty play, or off the ball incidents. It's still a young team with lots of energy, but that's no excuse for it, and we will definitely go back and have a look at it. "We will talk to the guys and can only hope that they learn from those mistakes."
