Eddie Jones hails Australian courage
Saturday November 27 2004
'That is one of the best games I've been involved in' says Latham
Australia coach Eddie Jones paid tribute to the industry shown by his players during their tense 21-19 win over England at Twickenham on Saturday - a win that exorcises the memory of their defeat to France. "Today was another benchmark test where you see where people are in their development and it's been a pretty purposeful month for us," said Jones. "We played the way we wanted to play. We moved the ball around really well. "Probably on the back of the France game we've developed more courage in the way we wanted to play. We had that today even though we were under pressure in the second half." The coach was also pleased with the way his forwards performed after being targeted as a potential weak link. "They proved themselves with a lot of diligent work," he said. "They did it today against a team who demolished the South Africa scrum last week and we caused England some problems." Australia fullback Chris Latham felt that the tourists' victory was built on the solid defence. "That is one of the best games I've been involved in. It's been a tough tour and we just dug in," he said. "We've got the best defence in the world and when we had the ball we used it well. "This is a quality English team and it means the world to beat them. "They came back at us really hard in the second half but we stuck at it, defending our line against a side that can really punish you."
