Robinson rues England's ill-discipline

'I think this will make the team even tighter'

England coach Andy Robinson on Sunday assessed his first defeat as England head coach - but insisted that panic is not on the world champions' agenda.

Australia extended a prolonged World Cup final revenge mission on England by following up their 51-15 summer romp in Brisbane with a 21-19 win at Twickenham  - their first in London since four John Eales penalties gave them a 12-11 victory in 1998.

England will head to Cardiff in 10 weeks' time for a potentially hazardous RBS Six Nations Championship opener against resurgent Wales, having won just two of their last seven Tests.

Australia (twice), New Zealand (twice), France and Ireland all stopped England's chariot in its tracks this year, providing a sobering experience following the intoxicating World Cup triumph.

Robinson though, believes that England are on the right road following an autumn series which produced a par score of two victories - over South Africa and Canada - from three starts.

"[The Six Nations] is a long way away at the moment, but I am really pleased with the way this squad has pulled together," he said.

"It would be very easy to go inwards because we lost a game, very easy to panic, but that won't happen.

"We have learnt a hard lesson, and I think it will make the team even tighter. It showed just what an unforgiving place international rugby is."

Robinson, who fiercely defended his decision to haul Paul off after just 26 minutes, identified England's late ill-discipline as a cause of their downfall.

"When you get to 19-15 up, as we did, we then gave two penalties away on our 10-metre line and they kicked them. We have got to think about our discipline in that area. That, to me, is potentially why we lost the game," he said.

"We talked all week about Australia not giving up, and we said the game was going to be won in 80-plus minutes. That's what rugby is all about when you play Australia.

"Australia took their opportunities ruthlessly. We lost a game of rugby, but it was a tremendous game, and there have been many positives for us, such as Mark Cueto, Jason Robinson's captaincy and Martin Corry - so many guys have come through."
