Dragons survived a late comeback from the Ospreys to hold on for 32-28 Magners League win on Friday.
The result seriously dents the Ospreys' chances of a home play-off semi-final at Rodney Parade.
Despite having nothing to play for, the Dragons had opened up a comfortable 32-11 lead over a lethargic away side but a fight back eventually brought the Ospreys to within four points.
Two tries from winger Aled Brew inspired the Dragons to the bonus-point before second half scores from wings Tommy Bowe and Nikki Walker nearly saw the away team snatch victory.
With neither team in European action last weekend, both sides came out with intent to play an attacking game. And the Ospreys opened up an early three point lead through a Biggar penalty but almost straight from the restart the play-off contenders were caught out by their over-ambitiousness.
From a turnover, number eight Toby Faletau and centre Ashley Smith exchanged passes which eventually saw Smith go over, with fly-half Jason Tovey converting.
The hosts' fly-half then extended their lead with two more penalties to take them five points clear.
Number ten Dan Biggar responded for the Ospreys with one of his own but the Dragons led 13-11 despite Tovey missing two late three pointers.
Newport pressed home their advantage in the early part of the second half when scrum-half Wayne Evans burrowed over, Matthew Jones converting, before Brew touched down. The winger then scored from another turnover to give the Dragons a seemingly unassailable 21-point margin.
But the Swansea-based side fought back. Firstly, Bowe scampered over before opposite winger Walker latched onto a cross-field kick. Replacement kicker James Hook converted both and added a penalty to leave them within an unconverted try of victory

scott johnson response to losing "...well we are the reigning champions...". Completely irrelavent and arrogant - should have been lambasting his overpaid and lethargic squad whilst congratulating the Dragons on being part of a quality game of rugby and coming out on top.

Presumably the 'plan' is to develop Biggar under an experienced SH 10 after the World Cup, using the cash from the exodus of injury prone home grown talent. Possibly Morne Steyn or the like? With a few other imports added.
And the management are a joke. The 16th man thing, and the Ricky Januarie issue both indicate the Ospreys have an admin and support staff that is inadequate for the region's stated ambitions. The mix and match selections (Hook at 12, Ryan Jones at 5, Collins at 8) keep producing the same subdued displays but nothing changes. That must be Scott Johnson's fault. The coaching staff below Johnson come from Lyn Jones' Neath side and over all that is Andrew Hore getting money for nothing on the evidence of this season.
Please guys, one experienced head coach, his choice of first team coaches, all on contract, no more poaching talent just after it peaks from other regions, pick the best 15 you can budget for, don't pick on reputation or salary, and win something before you start any Ospreylia/One True Region/Blackout salesmanship.
Then I might start buying a season ticket again.

what are the Ospreys going to do when Hook goes to france, they will not have any one to move to outside half when they realise Biggar (replaced after 49 min) is not up to it. the coachin staff is a joke

if the ospreys stopped poaching their players and the dragons acquired some good midfield players they would soon be a force once more. Foundations of a good young team-perhaps some kiwi attcking nous needed in the backline to complete the side.
