Treviso stun Ospreys

Ospreys had their Champions Cup campaign ended in disappointing style as they lost 23-20 against Treviso at Stadio Comunale di Monigo on Saturday.

It was Treviso's first win in Europe this season, and came thanks to a penalty try in the closing stages.

James King opened the scoring with a try within ten minutes, but Treviso fired back before the break with tries from Angelo Esposito and one from Marco Barbini on the brink of half-time.

Ospreys looked much more assured in the second period and added two further efforts from Eli Walker and Richard Fussell that looked like they were enough for a victory.

However, a last minute penalty try for Treviso was awarded following a scrum, as Treviso rounded their campaign off in style.

It took nine minutes for King to open the try-scoring, as he went over for his first try of the season.

It came following a neat spell of possession, and Tom Grabham burst through a hole in the Treviso defence before finding King who went over. Sam Davies' first kick of the afternoon was a success as he converted.

But the Italian strugglers hit back through a Jayden Hayward penalty 20 minutes in, and five minutes later they snatched the lead from the Welsh side.

Esposito stormed over the line following some neat handling, though Hayward fired the resulting kick against the post.

The third try came from the visitors, and it was Walker who got it, as he took advantage of a good Ospreys spell, allowing Davies to fire at goal.

However, he joined Hayward in missing a conversion, giving the Treviso kicker the chance to reduce the deficit to just a single point moments before the break.

And though it looked like Ospreys would have the lead, it was snatched by a second Treviso try.

Barbini finished the half in style at the Stadio di Monigo, going over following some neat work by Edoardo Gori. Hayward missed the difficult conversion however, as Treviso went in 16-12 in front.

Ospreys put in a much more assured second half performance however, as they looked to finish their European campaign with victory.

Davies' penalty narrowed the gap, and then Ospreys snatched back the lead thanks to a try from Fussell with ten minutes to play.

The full-back went over after more neat passing, as they cut apart the Treviso backline, though the two points didn't follow as Davies' effort sailed wide.

But just as it looked like Ospreys' campaign had finished with victory, Treviso were awarded the penalty try in the last minute to seal their first points in their final game.

The scrum forced Ospreys well back, and that left the official little choice but to award the five points, and when Heyward converted the try, the Italian side were able to celebrate their first victory.
