Canada beat Fiji as big guns advance
Saturday March 27 2004
All the favourites through into play-offs
Canada produced the first major upset of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Hong Kong Sevens on Day Two, on Saturday, with a 14-12 win over Sevens specialists, Fiji, but all the favourites, the Fijians included, progressed into Sunday's Cup quarter-finals.
The historic victory set the Canucks up with a quarter-final clash against the winners of the Los Angeles leg of the series, Argentina. Chris Strubin scored the crucial try for Canada - who were 12-7 down at half-time - and Mike Danskin slotted the match-winning conversion to give the Canucks a famous win. It proved to be the biggest shock of the day as everything else went according to plan for the favourites, with early wins for Australia, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Fiji, Argentina and Samoa getting the first round on Day Two under way. Australia's 68-0 demolition of Chinese Taipei was the biggest score of the first session - and ultimately the day - and they followed it up with a hard-fought 19-12 win over Samoa, which now sees the Australians up against South Africa, the winners of the opening leg of the series in Dubai last year, in the quarter-finals. Fiji, despite the loss to Canada, progressed to the knockout stages with a win over hosts Hong Kong earlier in the day and next meet reigning Hong Kong champions, England, with the latter looking to record their thrid consective tournament win after resounding victories over Scotland and Georgia. The final Cup quarter-final will be decided by Samoa and New Zealand with the latter breezing through the second day of Pool matches with a 38-7 win over the USA followed by a 52-0 demolition of Italy.
