26-year-old Hanley made his debut against Cardiff back in 1998 and is now the longest serving player at the South Manchester club.
He has scored 102 first-team tries altogether, including a modest four in ten appearances this season, although he did not play until February because of injury.
Altogether, he has played 123 matches for Sale in the Premiership, scoring 76 domestic tries.
"I am delighted to have signed a new contract. I am enjoying myself playing with a team who are top of the Championship with a chance of winning the title," said Hanley, and coach Philippe Saint-Andre was glad to have retained a key member of Sale's much-respected back three.
"Steve is a natural winger with a proven track record," enthused the Frenchman.
"He has recovered from a leg break and nasty knee injury in the last 12 months and has fought his way back into the team.
"The two tries he scored at London Irish a three weeks ago showed us all he was back to his best."
