MacDonald is back for Blacks

End of Japanese adventure

Former All Black utility back Leon MacDonald is on his way back to New Zealand after a stint with Japanese club Yamaha. The 26-year old has signed a two-year contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU).

MacDonald, an All Black from 2000 to 2003, has also signed a contract with the Canterbury Rugby Football Union. He is due to return to New Zealand at the end of the current season in Japan.

The return of MacDonald means he will be available for selection for the 2005 Super 12.

The announcement follows the recent signing of another high-profile New Zealand overseas-based player, Bruce Reihana.

NZRU Deputy Chief Executive Steve Tew said he was delighted at MacDonald's return.

"This is great news for New Zealand rugby.  It is fantastic that a player of Leon's calibre is coming back home to play rugby. He's been overseas and broadened his experience as a professional rugby player in Japan and now wants to return home to continue his career," said Tew.

MacDonald said he was looking forward to returning to New Zealand and the possibility of being selected for Test rugby, especially with the British and Irish Lions touring next year.

He said he had benefited from his time in Japan.

"I am enjoying playing for Yamaha. The club and its support structure has been great and I can see that the overseas player influence is helping Japanese rugby make progress to the extent that they will become more competitive internationally. I have been enjoying the free-flowing, running rugby in Japan," he said.

MacDonald added that he is looking forward to teaming up again with his mates in the Crusaders.

All Blacks Assistant Coach Wayne Smith, who selected MacDonald for the Crusaders in 1997-1999 and for the All Blacks in 2000, said it was fantastic to have him returning.

"I've travelled quite a few roads with Leon. At 26 he is still a young man and is a player with huge ability and physical commitment.

"It is great to see top players like Leon and Bruce coming home.  For the All Blacks selectors, it means that there is more competition for positions which can only be good," he said.

Canterbury RFU Chief Executive Hamish Riach said: "We are also thrilled at Leon's decision to come back to New Zealand. He is a very positive player and individual to have in a team environment. I'm sure I speak for all our fans, team and management in expressing our delight at his return to Christchurch."

MacDonald is expected to return to New Zealand before March, depending on how Yamaha goes in the Japanese competition.
