Namibia ring the changes
Thursday October 23 2003
Van Vuuren's World Cup double in doubt
Namibia coach Dave Waterston has made seven changes to his starting line-up for their Rugby World Cup Pool A clash against hosts Australia in Adelaide on Saturday. In the backline, Emile Wessels switches from fly-half to inside centre as Morné Schreuder pulls on the No.10 jersey, while Jurie Booysen replaces Vincent Dreyer on the left-wing. Waterston has made four changes up front, opting to change his loose trio in what is most likely an attempt to rest them for the team's match against Romania next week. That game is the only realistic opportunity either team have of winning a match in the tournament. Squad captain Sean Furter, Wolfie Duvenhage and Schalk van der Merwe are out, while Jurgens van Lill, Herman Lintvelt and Shaun van Rooi replace them. Furter and Van der Merwe will warm the bench and will probably come on against the world champions at some stages. In the final change up front, Cor van Tonder replaces Johannes Meyer - who drops out of the match-day 22 altogether - at hooker. Meanwhile, fly-half Rudi van Vuuren's chances of playing in his second World Cup of the year, following his participation in the Cricket World Cup in South Africa, are beginning to fade after he failed a fitness test - ruling him out of Saturday's clash. Van Vuuren, who opened the bowling for his country at the Cricket World Cup, claiming the prized wicket of India's Sachin Tendulkar, missed both of Namibia's previous two games because of a calf injury.
