Jason Robinson takes win in his stride
Saturday November 20 2004
'Good, strong professional performance'
England captain Jason Robinson revealed that he was not surprised with his team's 32-16 win over Tri-Nations champions South Africa at Twickenham on Saturday. The victory was ultimately far more comfortable than was initially expected.
Speaking after the match with man-of-the-match Charlie Hodgson, Robinson lauded his team's performance on the Twickenham turf. "I'm not at all surprised [with the win]," said Robinson. "It was a good, strong and professional performance from the boys. "There was a lot of talk during the week of how physical the South Africans are, and we were determined to better them." Hodgson, meanwhile, was only to happy to take a deserved swipe at his many critics after the England No.10 weighed in a 27-point performance. "A lot was said about me during the week, and I think I answered some of my critics and proved a few people wrong," said Hodgson with a smile. Hodgson didn't miss a single opportunity at goal against the South Africans, who gave the Sale Sharks star plenty of them. It was in stark contrast to Hodgson's effort with the boot against Canada last week, but he stressed that he never changed anything during the week. "I kept my routine the same," he said. "It [Canada] was an off-day for me and I put it behind me." England coach Andy Robinson said that it was a superb performance "across the board" by his team, but singled out Robinson, No.8 Martin Corry and lock Danny Grewcock for praise. Robinson refused to be lured into a debate over whether or not Hodgson was his No.1 fly-half regardless of the condition of Jonny Wilkinson, who was confirmed as a non-starter against Australia next week. Nor would he predict a Hodgson/Wilkinson partnership at fly-half and inside centre, despite incessant prodding by the media. "When both players are fit I will look at it," said Robinson. "Jonny is not fit so I am not going to answer that now."
