- Minute-by-minute: How the ABs ruined the day for South Africa
Two tries in the final three minutes saw New Zealand secure the 2010 Tri-Nations title in dramatic fashion with a 29-22 win in Johannesburg.
22-17 up going in the game's dying embers, the Springboks had the wind knocked out of them when their visitors came good thanks to scores from captain Richie McCaw and Israel Dagg.
It was cruel way for John Smit to leave the field in his 100th appearance for his country, especially as he was the man who missed a key tackle that let centre Ma'a Nonu slip through the net.
The atmosphere at the formerly-known Soccer City was electric for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was Smit's century and he jogged out to a mass of noise at the 94,000 capacity venue - a ground that had a huge amount of Elvis' in attendance due to a world-record being attempted. Don't ask.
Soon after, the Haka was drowned out by that same crowd singing 'Ole, ole, ole, oleee' and that seemed to spur on the hosts. Hits were fierce from the wounded Springboks as they drove the champions-in-waiting back in the tackle, which was something they were simply not doing during the opening fixtures of the tournament.
And boy did their intensity upset New Zealand's rhythm which had been so impressive up until now in 2010. They were simply knocked off their perch early on by a side hurting and in desperate need of a result, with Schalk Burger and a returning Juan Smith starring.
Captain Smit unfortunately did not have it all his own way though on Saturday, as his opening lineout was not straight and then he was penalised by Welsh referee Nigel Owens for delaying a throw soon after. Dan Carter adding three points was the net result.
South Africa were on the board on eleven minutes though when Kieran Read was caught going off his feet but this was all while the Springboks were turning up the defensive heat in Johannesburg. Those tackles and the general intensity brought another penalty just three minutes later when Ben Franks - in for his brother at tighthead this week - failed to roll away. Morne Steyn made no mistake from the tee and that was part of his 100 per cent record.
His rival was not so assured. Carter struck the post with almost a quarter of the game passed and if he was on-target before the break, New Zealand would have gone in ahead. As it was they were down 16-14 after two tries, one for Burger and then Tony Woodcock.
Burger's score was down to brute force as the All Blacks found themselves on the back foot. From close range the flank put his head down and burrowed his way over before lock Tom Donnelly found himself needing to just draw and give to his prop on 37 minutes.
The interval was always going to bring up the question whether South Africa could maintain their fire that was keeping New Zealand contained. The answer was they couldn't as the visitors enjoyed the lion's share of and territory, with the hosts breathing heavily in stages.
Steyn did extend the lead to eight points after the hour mark however, with Carter keeping New Zealand in touching distance when he knocked over a penalty of his own.
But seven minutes from time the visiting playmaker missed a shot from straight in front the uprights and that seemed to end all hope. The was far from dead.
Three minutes from time, McCaw collected the ball on the overlap and dived over in the right corner, despite the best efforts of three defenders and the TMO ruling.
And then came the moment that veteran hooker Smit would have had nightmares about on his special day as his missed tackle on Nonu led to Dagg going over to seal a memorable victory, which secured the title and kept their unbeaten run intact.
Man of the match: Many of the forwards put their hand up for this accolade but it has to go to a player on the losing side. Schalk Burger was immense in the tackle and combined well with Juan Smith and Pierre Spies at times. Hats off also to Richie McCaw and Ma'a Nonu.
Moment of the match: South African TMO Shaun Veldsman's decision to allow Richie McCaw's levelling try in the corner. It was a call that no one would want to make as the captain's foot dangled dangerously close the whitewash.
Villain of the match: A good game full of intensity with no yellow cards. No villain today.

A clear forward pass,a close call on McCaw slowing down the ball,a right call on McCaw try,but nobody comment on Burger try!?
He was tackled and held and he fights, wrestle, turns, moves at least 2 meters on the pitch, never letting the ball!?A triple movement not a double,so what is this?
A penalty to NZ should have been.
The most refs mistakes in the history of TN,this year!!
Maybe they took the disease from the soccer WC!!!!?????

Enough of the whinging from both sides, already. Is it not fitting to pay some tribute to the return of classic AB/Springbok rugby? Come on....show a little appreciation.
Don`t know how Nigel Owens was feeling after that one, though.

5lock4ward "owed one for teh last 3 years"? I thought that was why Richie had been allowed to do whatever he pleases at rucks for the last three years!?
Case in point again - I dont know how he did not get a yellow for slowing the ball when the Boks charged down Carters kick. Bakkies got one immediately with no warning for the same offence? And teh ref misssed a sitter of a forward pass, but fair enough mistakes happen- at least the game was close enough and the ref didn't allow the AB's to run obstruction all day like he did in the last two tests.
The AB's won (relatively) fairly and deserve their victory. The first two game still leave a sour taste in my mouth though, and if they had been reffed (or played by the AB's) in the same vein, the 3N would have been better off for it.
Having said that, it is clear that if the boks cannot win at home, in front of a massive crowd, and after teh AB's had to travel, that their game plan is outdated, and does not work. Every time we did hold the ball for a while, and played patiently on attack, we made good ground.
Frankly, I am not sure what it will take to convince the Bok coaches. If they refuse to learn from this, then we can kiss the world cup goodbye.
On the other hand, if we do learn from this, and start playing ball in hand rugby, the supporters will love it, the Boks with their good set pieces and powerful forwrds could be an unstoppable force. Perhaps we shoudl thank the AB's for showing us how to win the RWC.

@segonj says...it's official..the AB's are the dirtiest and most illegal rugby team on the planet!!! haha wait till the tide turns!
It's official, you are the number one whining, most clueless fan on this board. The tide has already turned and you got wet. Anyone who's followed the sport for more than five minutes knows it'll turn again but meantime have a bit of class, and maybe also try and learn something about rugby union.

Almost a complete reversal of last year, even down to the last match being a lot closer in the home country of the end looser... Just a lot more excuses this year..
Has to be said though that SA could very easily turn this around with the player resources available so, anyone thinking this is a sign of World Cup Glory approaching for the ABs would be getting ahead of themselves.
I do not believe this is a case of the ABs peaking but the Saffers in a low patch..
Only time will tell

Awesome effort from both teams, this was an amazing game of rugby to watch! The Boks defended like demons, and the ABs never relented with their attack. Not much separates these teams. ABs vs Boks is the pinnacle of rugby, well done boys. John Smit, congratulations for 100 games you have been a great player and ambassador of the game.

As a Bok supporter I am almos glad that the ABs won as hopefully it will be the straw that will lead to the termination of PdV --- this is not the first time that this clown has made subs. of top players at a critical moment --- this time with disastrous results!!!

Well played saffa - and even weller played NZ.
A very tense affair,. The AB's just stuck to their game-plan - and prevailed.
SA are still not fully committed to 'pick up the ball and run............' - sort of half way across the chasm, & perhaps they may be better suited to NH FOOT-ball [M Johnson prop] & serve them right if they quit SANZAR (good riddance to all those carping, boorish, buffoons who simply either NEVER played, or just never understood the game plus tgheir childish administrators - pace Dr Luyt) .
BUT..............if they do embrace the old Springbuck ruunnnninjng rrrruugggbbbie - why, they'll very likely succeed - and would deserve to.
In the meantime, it's off to Loftus [uggh - all those vildebeesties] to see if Oz can win on the veldt - I think not..........

What a marvellous game with a thrilling finish. However just think of the wider context. The Springboks playing in front of a huge crowd in Soweto with four non-white players behind the scrum. A Welsh referee who has come out as gay. Having been brought up in the 50s I believe that in many respects the world is a better place.

awesome to see the bok supporters gracious in defeat, except segonj...loser. you got to feel for smit, poor guy, wasnt quite the fairytale ending.
what about that pass from nonu to set up Dagg? great stuff.
stink about the forward pass. the only difference with 2007, is in 2007 it lead directly to a try, whereas this one was a phase (or 2 ?) before.
boks were awesome at the breakdown, and awesome aggressive tackling, great to see.
good to have the old boks back!

Well done ABs, but well done too Springboks. There is significant room for improvements for the Boks (with Jacque Fourie, Fourie du Preez, Bismark du Plessis, Frans Steyn, Heinrich Brussouw and the Beast out and possibly ready next year). I would start questioning the contribution of Morne Steyn and Bryan Habana in such top games, especially for the first one, it seems that it is just out of his level. Springboks, even with the current coach, seem a better prospect than the Abs, who were at full strenght for this Tri-Nations. Why did Juan Smith go off the field???
Again, the match was marred by poor refereeing, which costed a well deserved win to the Boks. Not to mention the forward pass just before McCaw's try, I would like just to highlight the continuous infringement during the scrums, superbly shown by the SA's TV. Instead of rubbishing Stuart Dickinson and the Italian pack who thrashed the AB's one last year, would Paddy say something about this to his referees and in particular the role of Mc Caw in this?
Mc Caw leaving the scrum consistently before it is over

I certainly rather play rugby and watch rugby than read blogs and comments as it seems there is so much nonsense from Bok fans. Such poor sports!
It was a great game, and the best team won, 14 tests in a row and 10 out of 15 Tri nations titles, now thats some stats, and still many Boks fans can't get over themselves(not all). Funny that the 2 guys that let SA down were the legendary Matfield and Smit. The rest did their country proud and could have beaten any other team the way they played, but this AB side is pretty awesome

Great game. Can't believe PDV took Juan Smith off. So glad he is back. AB's won fair and square and Boks still have a lot of work to do. Boks with get it right before the World cup.

Just finished watching the replay on my free tv (i don't have pay tv like sky). I must admit that after reading all the comments after the game i was expecting a closer game. Truth is it was basically one way traffic. Hats off to the SA's. They're not a useless team by a very long shot, but.....
I saw a lot more potential from the AB's throughout the whole game. Half breaks and near tries. Fitness and better coordination and organisation. And Dan Carter missing 4 kicks. South Africa were very fortunate not to be on the end of another hiding.
