No tears from Henry or Hansen
Thursday November 18 2004
'No mixed emotions on Saturday'
All Black coaches - and former Wales mentors - Graham Henry and Steve Hansen have vowed to shut out the emotions that will surely accompany them into Cardiff's Millennium Stadium this Saturday.
Both men might be inclined to clutch at their chests when the first strains of 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau' begin to reverberate around the ground, but don't count on that happening - this time it's New Zealand all the way. "It's great to see Wales playing so well, but I just want New Zealand to beat them," Henry told the BBC. "It's going to be a huge game, I have great respect for the Welsh boys, I know most of them and have watched them develop." "Stephen Jones is a player I can't speak highly enough of, Dwayne Peel is playing superbly... I could go on and on. "Wales gave New Zealand a huge fright in the World Cup and should have beaten England, on their day they can turn over anyone in the world. "They were very good against South Africa, playing the right sort of game for their skill level, athleticism and size. "They're trying to play no-tackle rugby when they're in possession. They are a much better team than when I was in charge, but then they are a completely different group of people. "There are not going to be any mixed emotions from me on Saturday, though, I want my side to play well and beat Wales." Hansen, who lead Wales up to the end of the 2004 Six Nations, was also adamant that he knew which side his bread was now buttered. "People have said I can't lose, they're wrong, I'm with New Zealand - There'll be no split loyalties," he said. "It's a strange feeling and it was funny seeing all the Wales boys again - it was like I'd only been on holiday. "It'll be a unique occasion for a coach, I don't know of anyone else who has been in this position having coached two teams in a year. "It will be a very physical game played at a lot of pace by two sides who play a similar style and want to use the width of the pitch. "In some cases they may even be using the same moves! "You always want to beat your brother more than anyone else and that relationship seems to have existed between Welsh and New Zealand rugby for years. "I'm just looking forward to Saturday, it's such a great stadium, such a great set of fans, and I have a lot of mates in both camps."
