Toulon get their first Top 14 win
Sunday October 02 2005
Woe for Pau
Newly promoted Toulon had their first taste of victory when they brought Bayonne from the Atlantic to their Mediterranean home and beat them 19-14. For Toulon, South African Harold Karele scored the only try. South African Chris Rossouw kicked a conversion and two penalty goals while his replacement at flyhalf Welshman Martin Pearson kicked a penalty and a drop. The Basques also scored one try, by fullback Benjamin Thierry to which veteran centre Richard Dourthe added three penalty goals. The win was enough to lift Toulon from the bottom of the table. Pau's woes continue. Last season they had to play-off to avoid relegation but are now bottom of the Top 14 after Narbonne beat them on their visit to Languedoc. Narbonne scored two tries to one. Centre Cédric Desbrosse and hooker Fabien Rofes scored the tries. Rofes converted one. Christopher Ruiz and his replacement at flyhalf Cédric Rosalen each goaled two penalties. Brendon Daniel, transferred this season from Bath to Pau, scored Pau's try which teenage flyhalf Lionel Beauxis converted. Beauxis also added four penalty goals for the losers. Brive had to come from behind to secure a home victory over Montpellier. Brive did not score a try in their victory. Maxime Petitjean, who joined Brive from Aurillac this season, scored five penalty goals and a drop to record all his side's points. Veteran Italian centre Cristian scored the only try of the match. David Bortolussi kicked three penalty goals.
