'Pitbull' brought to heel by BBC
Thursday July 29 2004
Brian Moore stung by 'gay slap'
The BBC have upheld complaints brought against commentator Brian Moore who described an ineffectual blow delivered in an altercation between two players during the 2004 Six Nations as a 'gay slap'. The former England hooker uttered the regrettable phrase during this year's Calcutta Cup match, after taking umbrage to the fact that an innocuous looking scuffle had merited the attention of the referee. The broadcaster said the comment was "inconsistent with the BBC's guidelines about avoiding hurtful or inaccurate stereotypes" but added there was no intention to offend. The BBC received ten complaints following the game, and have give Moore a rap on the knuckles - reminding the pundit of the "unacceptability of such terminology". |
