Wilkinson reveals his ultimate wish list

'I'd love to experience more of life'

England hero Jonny Wilkinson has expressed a little wanderlust, saying that his promotional tour to the Far East has opened his eyes to the possibilities of moving abroad.

The thinker: Wilko broods on the meaning of life

The Newcastle Falcons fly-half admitted at a luncheon in Tokyo that the lure of foreign fields had been playing on his mind.

The self-confessed train-oholic has been sidelined with injury for the last seven months and has had a great deal of time to re-evaluate his goals and aspirations.

"I'd love to experience more of life - I didn't maybe know that until I came this far and realised what's out there," said Wilkinson.

"One of my goals is to become fluent in another language and French is a language I have a tiny bit of a base in.

"The idea of going to play in France, perhaps to learn the language or even coming here [Japan] is definitely a suggestion that lingers with me.

"I think it's very much an open-ended dream really, an open-ended desire of mine that at some point I want to do something different."

But rugby fans need not worry unduly, the 25-year-old is not about to disappear into the sunset strapped to a rucksack - he revealed that he had composed a sporting wish-list whilst recovering from surgery to his troublesome shoulder.

"After I had my operation, I wrote down some things in a book that I wanted to achieve - and they take precedence over everything," he said.

"Rugby is the central core to everything that I want to do and nothing interferes with my rugby. I need to make sure I try and get what I can done.

"I'd love to be successful in Europe with Newcastle. I want to win Grand Slams. I want to win another World Cup - I want to be part of the team that's the first to win back-to-back World Cups.

"My aim is to be a better player and to come back bigger, better, fitter and stronger -  I can now say 'fitter', I can say 'stronger', 'bigger' in a sort of mental presence. But 'better' - we'll have to wait and see."
