World champs 'seem unhappy'

Players unhappy with management overkill
London Wasps coach Warren Gatland - after meeting with a number of the club's England players - revealed that the world champion squad is not a happy one. Gatland, who coached Wasps to a rare double this season by clinching both the Zurich Premiership and Heineken Cup titles, said that the players were becoming increasingly disillusioned by the structure of the England management. "They are frustrated. They have about nineteen coaching staff and they were saying they have so many meetings they almost have meetings about meetings," Gatland told AFP. "They have a lot of back-up staff and probably with that they all think they are important and want a lot of input. "So the England team have two-and-a-half-hour training sessions and two-hour meetings." Despite the problems, the New Zealander expects the tourists to improve on the performance that saw them fall to a 36-3 defeat last weekend in Dunedin - but believes an away win is probably now out of their reach. "I think that result surprised a lot of people," he said. "The All Blacks went back to old principles of forward play. It wasn't rocket science, it was just good basics. "I would expect England to be a lot better second time around but I'm not sure. It depends on what mental state they are in. "I think England were humbled a little bit in Dunedin." |
