Lions fans welcome Puma matchFriday September 24 2004Our readers welcome the Lions warm-up It seems like our readers are, in principle, in favour of the British and Irish Lions having a warn-up game against the Pumas in Cardiff, before they embark on their conquest of New Zealand. One Pumas fan wants the Lions to tour Argentina . Questions have been raised in some quarters over financial benefits and it's break with recent traditions. 'BRING ON THE PUMAS': "There should have been no questions about it. "There should actually be 2 or 3 fixtures to raise money for the WRFU. The RFU hardly needs money like the WRFU does." "Should the lions really be breaking with tradition like this? And where can I get tickets?" "Although England is fresh and flush from World Cup glory, I trust the English were only bidding against Wales RFU/Cardiff to build-up the Lions match and indirectly support their neighbour in need, right? "If not the English should be ashamed, again. The Olympic Committee chooses locations for the games to spread the wealth and revitalise countries and cities in serious need. "Local, regional and world rugby boards should firmly impose the same location selection perspective as the Olympic model. "By ranking unions every so often by financial strength, which is cyclical, awarding marquee events accordingly will keep all rugby stadiums and unions strong. Wales put on one hell of a World Cup for us years ago. Now they need our help, not our cold shoulder. "I am American with no ties to Wales, but I will be logging on to buy a red dragon jersey before jetting to Cardiff next year with my team, not only to see the Lions vs Pumas, but to support the Welsh Rugby Union as well. "Our sport is only as strong as its weakest link." "Good idea, for Lions to play before tour, but why boring Argentina? Surely Woodward could have had a look at all his players and had his whole squad involved in a full on trial." "The Millennium Stadium is a perfect venue for the match and I'm sure the WRU will extract an appropriate fee for the use of the stadium, BUT if there is any profit, it must go to subsidise what will be a very expensive tour, given Sir Clive's extended backroom staff." "I know it's a tradition for the Lions team to be a touring side, but nevertheless it's a pleasure to see the Pumas given the chance to face such a prominent adversary. "It would be even better to have that game in Buenos Aires, as the first stage of the tour, but since it's actually a fundraiser I can live with the thought of seeing it just on TV.
