Christian Lealiifano being chased by Culum Retallick

18 points: Christian Lealiifano

The Brumbies further silenced their doubters by ending the Highlanders' unbeaten start to Super Rugby 2012, overcoming them 33-26 in Canberra.

A couple of tries from wing Joe Tomane and one for openside flank Michael Hooper to accompany 18 points from the boot of Christian Lealiifano saw the Australian outfit cause a shock result.

Saturday's victory takes the Brumbies top of their conference, temporarily at least, with an improved intensity at the breakdown and strong counter-attacking ability helping them over the finish line.

It was the first taste of defeat in 2012 for Jamie Joseph's side, who were missing John Hardie and key player Adam Thomson for the clash.

Their tries came from Aaron Smith and Shaun Treeby, while Colin Slade added 13 points and Chris Noakes slotted over a penalty later on.

What will be a major worry for the Highlanders is the loss of fly-half Slade, who was taken off in an ambulance with a serious ankle fracture.

Slade, who injured his groin as Dan Carter's replacement for the All Blacks in last year's World Cup, has had dreadful luck with injuries, breaking his jaw twice in recent seasons.

The Brumbies were up 14-3 after 16 minutes after rugby league covert Joe Tomane scored twice. His first score came in fourth minute against the run of play as he intercepted a pass before running the length of the field to the line. Tomane's second try, after Slade had kicked a drop-goal, saw good work from outside centre Andrew Smith finished off by the wing.

The Highlanders pulled it back to trail 17-13 when Hosea Gear sliced through to put scrum-half Smith over, but the Brumbies led 20-13 at the break to warm their 12,000 supporters.

The resolute Highlanders levelled twice in the second half but the clinching try for the Brumbies came in the 63rd minute when Hooper picked up a loose ball from a maul and charged over for Lealiifano to convert for a 33-26 lead which they safely held to full-time.

The scorers:

For Brumbies:
Tries: Tomane 2, Hooper
Con: Lealiifano 3
Pen: Lealiifano 4

For Highlanders:
Tries: A Smith, Treeby
Con: Slade 2
Pen: Slade 2, Noakes
Drop: Slade

Reality check Trinats

NZ have 4 teams in the top 7. Your credibility continues to tumble. Just like your teams.

trinats; don't know who claimed Highlanders were the best franchise - four wins by less than 4 points, a penalty either way and they'd have five losses now; still, at least competitive to the end yesterday and not capitulating to a 53 point loss showed some character.

Trinats, Best NZ franchise (at the moment) looses away to best Aussie franchise (in the history of super rugby) is a far more accurate analysis, wouldnt you think?

LMAO

Seeing the Bulls/Reds result your question is answered.

Time for you to take a reality check on the rubbish you spout.

Highlanders without five of their top players now have a sixth out. This is the same situation as last year when suddenly it all fell apart. Depth has always been an issue for the franchise.

Trinats I wouldn't say the Highlanders are NZ's best franchise. What they seem to be doing this year compared with the previous years back to '04 is winning the close games by a whisker. As compared to the Aucklanders who are losing by just a point or two.

Best wishes for your recovery Colin Slade.

Trinags - makeshift Aussie team? Interesting description for Australias most successful Super Rugby franchise ever, with the least amount of foreign imports....

Great game to watch, in fact all games so far have been pretty good. No surprise here, as I mentioned earlier this week I felt the Highlanders would struggle. As they showed against the Chiefs last week this Brumbies outfit looks impressive and all credit to Jake White but then the man is a WC winner so should we be surprised.? The Brumbies challenge will be to hold onto him as the team grows. I really think the Brumbies could take top spot in the Oz conference, the Tah's have put in their one good performance for the year and if the Red's lose tonight....well. (hope you set your alarm Trinats) The Highlanders came back pretty stongly but were looking tired, this is where the depth I have been banging on about will come into play, I don't think the Oz teams have it and I am not really sure about the Highlanders either. They have a couple of home games left before the bye so hopefully they should be in a good position by start of round 8.Cruel luck for Colin Slade I am hearing it is a bad ankle break and footy could be over for him in 2012, the move to Dunedin just hasn't been lucky for him.
