- Minute-by-minute: How the Crusaders shrugged off the Cheetahs!
Israel Dagg's try saved the Crusaders' blushes as they beat the Cheetahs 28-21 in their Christchurch Stadium bow.
It was far from vintage rugby from the Super Rugby giants as they struggled at times against the fearless Bloemfontein outfit on Saturday.
The homecoming fixture was played in front of a sell-out crowd of 17,500, as Todd Blackadder's side outscored the Cheetahs three tries to two to open their new fortress with only their second win of the season from their four previous outings.
The Cheetahs cut down the Crusaders 15-point lead early in the second-half to be on level terms at 21-21 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
But as the clock counted down the Crusaders moved up a gear and Andy Ellis and Tom Taylor both went within a whisker of scoring before full-back Dagg crossed for the match-winning score.
A critical factor for the Crusaders was their pack, with an All Blacks front-row of hooker Corey Flynn and props Owen and Ben Franks who gave the Cheetahs a torrid time in the scrums early on.
It was from a scrum penalty just before half-time that led to the first try in the new stadium when Sean Maitland scored in the corner. Until then it had been an uninspiring encounter with two penalties to Taylor and one by Johan Goosen the only points on the board.
But that try lifted the intensity of the game with the Crusaders going into half-time with an 11-3 lead which was extended to 18-3 immediately after the break when Dan Carter emerged.
With his first touch of the ball in a game since being injured out of the World Cup six months ago, Carter neatly put Robbie Fruean into a gap and the big centre scored near the posts.
Taylor converted the extras and with their tails up the Crusaders immediately stormed deep into Cheetahs' territory only to cough up possession to the free-running South Africans.
From turnover ball on their own line the Cheetahs swept the length of the field with Goosen, Andries Strauss and Willie le Roux featuring in the move before Goosen crossed wide out.
Another exchange of penalties between Goosen and Taylor had the Crusaders leading 21-11 when the Cheetahs were rewarded for a patient build up with a try by Robert Ebersohn.
Goosen missed the conversion but evened the score with his third penalty of the spectacle.
But the hosts then mounted a wave of forward drives up to the Cheetahs line, drawing in the defence before Ellis sent the ball to Dagg to cross unopposed for the match-winning try.

Trinats, the wallpaper joke, oh how we laughed, what wit
One for your Reds then, unsure if that tape measure goes up to 61 though, or even 53 for their losing margin.
For now, Reds hold the title of 2012 for:

This was a tough one for the Crusaders, given the occasion and fans' expectations. And the Cheetahs were a good chance of an upset anyway.
But the doubters here may be right. Coach Blackadder is just the leader to have when your backs are against the wall, as was the case last year and for that famous final in Canberra. But his tenure as coach has shown he brings little else to the table. Come back Robbie Deans!
@ Daibok
You are right: booing was disrespectful. Though I am not from the Crusaders' region, allow me to apologise on behalf of all New Zealanders. When I was a kid, no Kiwis outside of Canterbury booed the opposition. I guess you were always going to hear boos in Christchurch; but not in great numbers, and now it seems that everyone is doing it. I hate sitting in Wellington's Cake Tin or Auckland's Eden Park and hearing my fellow fans booing. It is shameful and it is stupid. Do the booers really think it is harder to kick against the booers than to kick in a deathly silence?

@worm: Strong words, since the season has only just started. Look for the Crusaders near or at the top as usual at the end of the competition... they are still the Super Rugby team to beat, their record speaks for itself.

How good were the cheetahs! i think the ref felt that the crusaders needed to win their first game back in christchurch coz he was absolutely shocking but only for one team.... anyway that 1st cheetahs try was one of the best tries ive ever seen!!!!! im not from the free state by the way i just like the underdog

This was a good game, good to see the Saders playing at home and good to see Carter back. But: Can Crusader fans explain why it was necessary to boo Cheetah conversions? This left a sour taste and was disrepectful of a Cheetah's side that came to play rugby.

Good effort by the Cheetahs. It did seem though to me that the Crusaders got away with a fair ammount of offside play during the game. All in all though, probably the right result.

Another tight game.... Well done Cheetahs, some of the perenial strugglers are proving me wrong. They look like one of the most fluent attacking teams in the comp. The ending was strange but they were taking the percentages. With the field position they were in, it was more likely that they would lose their bonus point than getting a length of the field try & needing a conversion to gain an extra point.

WTF was that? Not even a bonus point... semis look very very far away in both senses i.e. we'll struggle to be there & if we are it'll be in oz or SA. Not happy!
