Jonathan Stones: Outgoing

SANZAR on Tuesday announced the appointment of Hurricanes CEO Greg Peters as the new CEO of the Tri-Nations governing body.
Peters, who had previously been at Bay of Plenty, was a part of the management team that brokered SANZAR's TV broadcast rights in 2003 and 2004 and has also worked for SANZAR as a tournament director. He replaces outgoing CEO Jonathan Stones.
Current SANZAR Chairman Mike Eagle said Mr Peters is a great fit for SANZAR given his previous roles and SANZAR experience, and with his insight as CEO of one of the participating franchises in Super Rugby.
"SANZAR is in the midst of its largest transformation since its foundation with the expansion to 15 teams and a new conference-based model for Super Rugby, and the inclusion of Argentina from 2012 in a revamped Tri Nations, so it's a vital time to evolve the off-field structures," he said.
"Greg brings a wealth of relevant experience and is well respected not only in New Zealand but in rugby circles across SANZAR so we believe he is the right person to lead us in this exciting growth phase for rugby in the southern hemisphere."
Peters now has time to finish off his role with Wellington and the ITM Cup campaign before moving to Sydney in November to start his SANZAR tenure.
"I have really enjoyed my time with Wellington and the Hurricanes and it is always hard to leave a job that has been so rewarding and while there are still goals to achieve," he said.
"However, it's rare to have an opportunity such as this one to lead a major rugby organisation through a significant growth phase.
"I am sure there will be challenges but that's what makes sport so compelling, and the strength of the SANZAR alliance and the major competitions speak for themselves.
"The Tri-Nations features the three top-ranked teams in world rugby and we are about to welcome Argentina who finished third in Rugby World Cup 2007. In Super Rugby, we have the world's most demanding cross-border provincial rugby competition and that intensity is set to increase with the new conference model, so there is no more exciting time to get involved."

Fair enough and thanks for your last comments
Of course I don't quite agree with your opinion on O'Brien but that's life and the next bottle of wine I buy will be of the excellent South African variety and I will raise a glass to you.
Cheers

@7ton,
Stones was appointed when the post rotated. Peters is now permanently in charge. Ja, I was unfair to label all Kiwis corrupt. What I should have said was that in my opinion one in particular, O Brien, has crossed the line that divides between passion for your team and doing everything possible to help it. For what it's worth, I apologize for labeling all Kiwis corrupt. I crossed the line there.

@stellenboshed
So Jonathon Stones was not an important appointment then?
As for insulting South Africans mine are in response to just a few and not the majority of fair-minded SA fans which is slightly different to your accusation of all Kiwis being corrupt.
Actually I would very much like to see the WC hosted in SA again but in regards to 2011 I think it fair to say that between NZ and SA it was probably NZs turn based on when it was last held there.

Hi 7ton,
I didn't change my tune actually, my point was that Peters is the first permanent appoitment. You can carry on insulting South Africans all day, it really is no issue, and yes we do the same thing back, which somehow doesn't solve anything. I would just love it if for once an important appointment or the RWC hosting rights went SA's way. If you want to see an almost SA-free building (yes I know you are thinking what a pleasure) pop in to the IRB headquarters.

Following tri-nats revelation re Jonathon Stones that was a pretty quick change of tune by you.
So because NZ beat SA you seem to think ,and spout of, that they are all corrupt.
Never mind the wine I would go and see a doctor who may well prescribe you some anti-delusion pills

Trinats,
Ja I am a proud Matie, even if it is by association. My daughter is at the varsity and I cycle the paths on the mountains above Coetzenberg frequently. My point though is that Peters is the first permanent appointment, so the rotational plan has stopped. I would just like one thing in rugby to go SA's way rather than NZ, NZ, NZ. Who decided that a Kiwi should take over? We may have another O Brien disaster on our hands. Time to hit the bottle. 2010 has produced some really good local Sauvignon Blanc.

Yep, just what we need...another one eyed New Zealander involved in the management of rugby. You can call us whingers as much as you like, but it amazing how these top posts never go to a South African. And don't tell me we do not have competent officials here, because I may ask in return to name one Kiwi who is not corrupt.

@davodiablo
Thanks for the reference. I was very pleased to read his willingness to engage the issue rather than be dismissive as O'Brien tends to be. I may have mis-judged in my earlier comment...time will tell.

When the Saffas stop squealing about conspiracies and threatening to leave SAZAR every time they loose a few games then and only then will the rest of us consider them grown up enough to have the top jobs.

@ kiwi Zanzar Boss and Kiwi ref boss...and the kiwis do not see a pattern. I wonder what he means by 'evolving the off-field structures'. If only the Union's finacial contribution was proportional to the amount of say they get.
