Steenkamp: Takes the top gong

Springbok prop Gurthrö Steenkamp was on Monday named South Africa's Player of the Year for the 2010 season.

The Blue Bulls star captured the crown at the end of a fabulous domestic season during which he helped his side claim their third Super 14 title.

Steenkamp's sublime performances for the Springboks this year as well as his efforts for the Bulls saw him claim the award ahead of some outstanding competition. Also nominated were Gio Aplon, Juan de Jongh, Francois Hougaard and Schalk Burger.

Lions fly-half Elton Jantjies was named as Young Player of the Year; the Bulls were Team of the Year and Western Province boss Allister Coetzee was chosen as Coach of the Year among the other main awards, which are voted for by rugby journalists.

Western Province wing Gio Aplon was selected by his peers as Players' Player of the Year.

Jantjies claimed a second award on Monday evening as the SA Under-20 Player of the Year, following his outstanding performances for the Baby Boks at this year's IRB Junior World Championships in Argentina where they ended the tournament in third position.

@jmanngod, does it really? what does it say? What languid but profound inference do you suppose we draw from your listless but typically inane pronouncements?

steenkamp does look like a comic book villain though, doesn't he? A sort of cross between Lex Luther and Dr Evil. He should be stroking a cat instead of that award....

I think SA rugby is in a lot of trouble looking at some of the above names!
