Still in the hot seat: De Villiers

Peter de Villiers will carry on as Springbok Head Coach following an extensive review of the international season, SARU confirmed on Monday.

All aspects of onfield and off-field performance were examined by a committee chaired by Mr James Stoffberg, chairman of SARU's rugby committee and vice president of SARU.

The committee received reports from De Villiers on issues that had been discussed with SARU leadership at two previous meetings since the ending of the Tri-Nations season.

"The committee's focus was very much on examining areas where we can assist the Springbok team and coach in making sure they arrive at the field in the best possible state of preparation," said Mr Stoffberg.

"We reviewed the season to date and have discussed options for assisting the team in those preparations."

Mr Stoffberg said that the focus was now on selecting and preparing a Springbok squad for the end-of-year tour under the guidance of the current management.

"It was a frank meeting but a positive one," said Mr Stoffberg.

"The results of the Springbok team are of paramount importance to our organisation and everyone in the room was committed to providing the team with the best conditions in which to succeed."

De Villiers said: "It was a very helpful process as we have thoroughly reviewed all our systems. We know there are areas in which we must improve and we will be focusing on those in the remainder of the season."

The Springboks are next in action against Ireland in Dublin on November 6, 2010.

bodiddly, one thing is evident from your inane anti-Saffa comments, like Peter de Villiers you are part of the neanderthal club. There is no justice in regard to this coach, his appointment was politically and racially driven, and he is not up to the job. If this were not so SARU would not be considering appointing a technical advisor - or two - to help De Villiers. If he was as good as you and others here are making out, why would SARU consider that? Your bias blinds any logic.

Who cares....you know what else they say Neanderthals have in abundance....it will be a feast to raid Kiwi Land.

Great decision and justice for PDV. The Saffer Neanderthals won't get it and will play merry hell of course but then they are just bandwagon ballast so they don't really count do they.

No big surprise here as he fits the main requirement that the SARU is looking for in a coach...

I dunno aye...You can help but feel a little for PDV.

The guy was thrown into a role due to political reasons and was probbaly told he had to take the job or else he would never coach in Sth Africa again.

Hes done some good things (B&I lions, Winning in NZ, Tri-Nations) and some things have gone really wrong. Seems like a pretty reasonable coaching timeline.Up's and downs.

It was only last year the All Blacks lost all 3 to Sth Africa and weve changed it all around. Thats mainly becasue we get behind our team and coaches (excluding cantabrians) no matter what. A good majority of us are like this.

I dont want Sth Africa to win the world cup, but I wuldnt mind to see them make the semi's or final.

PDV isnt a bad guy, just in Sth Africa's current climate, hes in the wrong place at the wrong time, due to some 3rd party decisions. Give the guy a break.

I must say, I agree with the continuaty stance. And yes, as with Jake White, PDV should get the rub of the green.

However, I would gag him from public speaking, have Jake White asist coach the end of year tour and sell Ricky January to the Bulgarian national squad.

Regardless, the Springboks will win RWC2011!

Go Bokke!!!

@boysinblue....even more interesting comments from some of the saffas are that apparently they were a shoe in to win next years RWC if pdivvy had gone......I reckon a large portion of bok fans are as dillusional as their rugby board.

Whilst SA has copius amounts of talented players, so do NZ, Aus, France and England. Any of these teams can win it whether SA had a better coach or not.

Put your minds at ease across there in sunny SA that we down here do not fear SA in any tournament.........it's only France who really worries most NZ fans when it comes to RWC!!

Interesting comments from all the Kiwis, surely you'd prefer to win a world cup because you're the best team in the world, not because one of your main rivals has an incompetent coach?

Thanks SARU, that's another classic transformation own goal! It's official - WE NOW HAVE A ZERO CHANGE TO WIN NEXT YEAR'S WORLD CUP... May the best team excluding us win! (AB's & Wannabees or wildcard Ireland/England...)

I'm just sad that so much talent in the Republic translates into the same lacklustre game plan, and sad that we've got at least another year of this. We can see what good coaches (Mitchell & Plumtree - both Kiwis) can do with SA talent but they don't fit the "political puppet" agenda. If PDV makes a total horlicks of this EOYT (like he did last year) then surely SARU headquarters will be burned down by a mob.

Yay!!! That's one less worry for the all blacks for next year now it's just the aussies and the french left...

Hoskin is really the one who should be going. De Villiers should never have been placed in the role in the first instance - At least not without learning the trade. Ultimately that's probably what's saved him. The current administration's unwillingness to acknowledge, at least publicly, their poor decision. The loss of face was clearly too much to bear so we'll have another year of P Divvy and his antics. RSA deserves better from its rugby administration.

What a shame, any other coach would have been long gone but yet the clown stays on. Good luck to all the other teams at the World Cup the trophy is up for grabs.
