Springbok captain John Smit has committed his playing future to the Sharks by signing for 2011, ending speculation that he would join the Lions.
It was widely reported that Smit had been offered a sizable chunk of money to follow former Sharks coach Dick Muir to Johannesburg.
On Thursday, however, is was revealed that Smit has extended his contract with the Durban team.
Sharks chief executive Brian van Zyl told Supersport from Bloemfontein, where the Sharks' dispute with the Cheetahs over Lionel Mapoe's contract is being heard, that Smit will wear black and white in 2011.
Shortly after the news broke, Golden Lions Rugby Union President Kevin De Klerk dismissed the supposed offer to Smit as "media rumours"
"Contrary to what has been presented to the public, through various media channels, the Golden Lions Rugby Union never engaged with John Smit at any stage whatsoever regarding joining the Lions," De Klerk said in a statement.
"We did have internal discussions about him possibly joining us, but we decided against making an offer."
Smit is expected to retire after the World Cup in New Zealand but will have one last tilt at winning the Super Rugby trophy that he came so close to lifting in 2007.
