With John Smit recovering from surgery and Victor Matfield likely to be given a rest, who will lead South Africa on the their end-of-year tour?
There was a lot of mixed reaction to the news that South Africa's most capped skipper would not be at the helm when the Springboks embark on their Grand Slam tour in November. While many are worried that the team will simply not be a cohesive unit without their undisputed leader, there are plenty of fans that welcomed the news that a younger set of legs will be packing down in the front row.
Assuming the current coaching team remains in place - and all indications are that Peter de Villiers and co. will keep their jobs - it seems clear that Smit will captain the side at next year's World Cup.
But who will take over in November? As vice-captain, Matfield is the obvious candidate, but the Bulls skipper has played a lot of rugby this year, far more than was originally hoped, meaning there is a strong argument for him to put his feet up and have a proper break rather than risk sustaining a serious injury in Europe.
It's almost impossible to imagine that a new captain will be picked from outside the current group of senior players which narrows the list down significantly.
Don't be surprised if Chiliboy Ralepelle gets the job. The Bulls hooker has long been seen as the natural successor to Smit. Having gone to the same school, they share a close relationship. Since Jake White handed 'Chili' the reigns for a midweek game against World XV back in 2006, he has been groomed somewhat as a future Bok leader. His appointment would also go down very well with certain elements of the South African government.
But is Ralepelle good enough for the starting XV? Most would consider Bismarck du Plessis the first-choice hooker and it would certainly be a shame to see the Sharks charger forced to ride the bench (again).
Fourie du Preez would be a strong candidate but he is still recovering from shoulder surgery meaning he won't be on the flight North.
Stormers captain Schalk Burger is another possible leader after guiding the Cape side to the Super 14 Final, but he too has had a long season and the arguments for resting Matfield must surely also apply.
Cheetahs skipper Juan Smith, on the other hand, is fresher than most of his Bok team-mates having missed part of the Super 14 after his father passed away and was absent from the overseas leg of the Tri-Nations as he returned from injury.
Smith is a stalwart in the Bok back row and commands the respect of all his team-mates. He is also an experienced captain having led the Cheetahs for many years.
Jean de Villiers is another senior player in with a shout having already captained the Springboks before (against the World XV at Ellis Park is 2006) but his stint away from the team while in Ireland could be to his disadvantage.
An outside bet is Emerging Boks captain Dewald Potgieter, who, unlike Smith, is very comfortable in dealing with the press but, like Ralepelle, is not guaranteed a place in the starting line-up.
So who will it be? If Matfield doesn't tour the logical choice seems to be Smith - but we won't be putting any money on it.

It is already confirmed that 13 contracted Springboks will be rested! John Smit will be back in training in January and I think if gets his weight back to 115kg he will be on top form next year. His last game against the Wallabies was his best and it will also be his final year in the jersey, so don't right him off just yet. Chilliboy was by far the best impact player from the bench in this years Trinations, so i think his place in the team was justified, so no point going on about why he was picked, the fact is that he was awesome when he came onto the field and I can think of many turnovers that he won! The end of year tour is going to be very interesting indeed and I for one think we are going to be very exciting. A fully fit Bakkies Botha itching to get back on the field partnered with Andries Bekker who will have recovered. Bismark is playing some cracking rugby and will be steaming hot, lets not forget Brussouw partnered with Juan Smith as the definite captain seeing that the chances are likely that Burger will not tour as he is part of the 13 contracted players that will be rested. Jean de Villiers should be vice-captain, he has a lot of rugby sense and is very comfortable in front of the camera, this tour will be the first tour that PDV is not with Smit, matfield and Du Preez, the so-called coaches of the team, so lets see how PDV does without them! At the end of the day if the players are 100% fit they will perform, look at how well Juan Smith played when he returned from compassionate leave! The end of year tour is going to be a surprise or a disaster, but don't be surprised if PDV gets the last laugh! They will be hungrier than ever

I think if Matfield gets left home and is thus unable to step in as captain the coaches decision will say a lot about John Smit's future. If it's Smith or another vet then there's still room for Smit but if it's someone like Kankowski or another current 'fringe' player I'd say Smit's time was up. Everybody knows that Ralapelle's time as captain was politically motivated. I would not rule out Van Der Linde as a possible choices with is World Cup and Heineken Cup experience.

Chilliboy is nothing but a political pawn sorry to say and much as I'd like to see him start a game and hopefully even captain the Boks his continued inclusion on the bench and even talk of future captaincy isn't doing any good for transformation. He needs regular gametime and if that means moving province it'll be for his own good. Prove your critics wrong on the provincial pitch and the test pitch will follow naturally. PdV needs to talk to Chilliboys agent and the clubs to come up with some arrangement for regular play. I can't see the potential in him, not yet atleast. Meanwhile my vote is Juan for captain!

Completely agree with Scot_rsa. Call me old fashioned but the captain should be guaranteed to play when fit? Chillyboy is way behind Bismark and Smit at hooker whilst Potgieter is not really in the picture for a backrow spot next year. Why waste the experience of leadership on guys that are unlikely see action in the big games.
Imagine the scene, 60 mins in at the World Cup Semi-Final against the All Blacks. It's a fast game and but the Boks are hanging in there. The crowd is getting restless and the referee is feeling the pressure. The home side are starting to get the 50/50 calls much to the frustration of the South African players. Smit is out of his feet and needs to be called ashore. Matfield is also struggling with a dead leg and is no longer able to make an impact. Who is going to take on the mantle of leadership? The answer should be the captain for the tour North.

Ja, Juan deserves it more. Has Chiliboy even played 60 MINUTES of first-class rugby (international & super-14 combined!) this whole year?? He can't even make the starting line-up of any of the South-African super-14 teams, and there is talk of him captaining the Boks??? What a joke!

One horse race, Juan Smith and deservedly so. Like all great captains he does his talking on the field, unlike Chilliboy. This suits the Boks psyche. As for Potgieter, I'd like to see him as 1st choice No8 on the tour (yeah I know he's a flank), future captain? With him and Smith in the back row the Boks would have real grit.
