SKY_MOBILE Smit John South Africa

Out for three months: John Smit

Springbok captain John Smit underwent a successful operation to repair a chronic cervical disc in Durban on Wednesday.

Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts said the procedure was carried out to ensure that the disc did not get progressively worse. "It will also ensure John's availability for the Springboks and the Sharks for the 2011 season," Roberts added.

"The timing was right for John to undergo surgery as he will now have a prolonged period of recovery in advance of the new season," said Roberts, confirming the success of the procedure.

"This was not a career threatening injury," Roberts added.

Smit, who has been on the Springbok conditioning programme, will be sidelined for three months and is therefore not available for the Springbok tour to Europe in November and December.

I still rate this guy. A rest is probably what he needs. Imagine Smit (when fully fit) playing the first half and then Bismark coming on in the second when the legs of the opposition will be that little bit more weary. He could wreack havoc.

Word is that PDV is having a special zimmer frame engineered for him and he will be there as captain at the 2015 cup.....

Gives Bismarck and the next in line an opportunity in Europe. But the Boks need Smit if they are going to win a World Cup in NZ - it will be composure, decision making and experience that will be needed in the big matches.

a blessing in disguise for the Boks if we're being honest. It's time for Bismark du Plessis to become the fixture in the front row. Possibly a blessing for Smit as well, if he can drop some lbs. on the conditioning program and rest up he might be able to get back to his best instead of being on the team for sentimental reasons.
