Bismarck du Plessis: Should he play or train?

The South African Rugby Players Association (SARPA) has claimed that the one-size-fits-all decision to withdraw all contracted Springboks from the Currie Cup lacks "scientific insight."

The decision to pull all contracted Springboks out of the domestic competition until October 6 was reportedly taken to appease feuding Unions.

The implementation of a blanket ban on selecting contracted players while allowing non-contracted Boks to play on seems to lack commonsense with SARPA claiming that promises made to players "were not honoured."

The move means players in need of game time such as Bakkies Botha, Ricky Januarie, JP Pietersen, Beast Mtawarira, Bismarck du Plessis and CJ van der Linde cannot play in the Currie Cup while others like Gurthro Steenkamp, who has played non-stop this year, could be forced to play for their provinces.

Others such as Heinrich Brussow and Adi Jacobs who have been on long-term injury layoffs, now have no chance of playing competitive rugby for another month.

SARPA said in a statement that the move "could have dramatic and long-term effects for the national team and the World Cup campaign in particular."

"No Springbok players or SARPA were consulted or asked for input regarding this decision," said Sarpa Chief executive Piet Heymans.

"We have received complaints from our players, who are unhappy because they were told at the beginning of the year their conditioning and rest programmes would be monitored on an individual basis.

"They were promised that those needing rest would be afforded such time and those needing game time would be given the opportunity. This has not happened and the opposite could now be true."

The Players Association noted that the GPS technology at the Springbok management's disposal could have been used to make individual choices.

"With the current GPS technology that the Springboks have been using, individual resting and conditioning is possible and would have produced the best results for everyone from the individual players, the team, the country and SARU in its goal to retain the William Webb Ellis trophy in New Zealand next year" continues Heymans.

"To have a number of top Springboks who are either returning from injury or suspension to be banned from finding their form again on the rugby field is certainly not in the best interests of South African rugby as a whole," adds Heymans.

Sarpa has also called on Saru and the provinces "to honour the undertaking made to the players and use scientific data and research, rather than emotion, to ensure the Springbok players are all on the best individual conditioning and rest programmes that will benefit the national team leading up to the Rugby World Cup next year."

@ brett, being from Ireland I can safely throw stones from my glasshouse. Unlike good old SA & Oz we didn't displace the indigenous populations by brute force and maintain our grip with shocking violence and intimidation. We did boot out our English colonial masters but people seem to congratulate us for that. We're proud of our history, i'm sorry for the shame you must feel about yours.

as a nz supporter

I dont believe any s hemp players that play their trade in the n hemp ''come back as good . Its a slower tempo and differant style there, and most of the ones that go ''are past their best ''with the exception of one or two that left the ab's for financial or personal reasons. to me the cons out weigh pro''s ''it would be a step in the wrong direction if nz were to adopt this system of selection both provincial and national

NZ has to keep the home player rule, as long as possible. NZ just does not have the money, the population to pay our players what they are worth. There are also runs probably earning a lot more than Richie McCaw in Europe all over the place. We will have to give way eventually, once the balance of NZ talents has left the SH for the $$, but we have to hold on as long possible.

You could pick a pretty good NZ team from Europe. Nick Evans would be 1st five behind Carter. Carl Heyman (best in the world?) and Greg Sommerville. Rico Gear, Scott Hamilton, Doug Howlett, Regan King, Campbell Johnstone Carl Hoeft, Kees Meeuws, Campbell Johnstone, Clarke Dermody, Tom Willis, Chris Jack (just returned), Simon Maling and Greg Rawlinson, Marty Holah and Xavier Rush, Jerry Collins and Chris Masoe, Andrew Blowers, Byron Kelleher, Martin Paterson, Ross Filipo, Sione Luaki, Isaia Toeva and Filo Tiatia. And the guys who haven't played this year, Ali Williams, Andrew Hore, Ben Smith, Leila Masaga, Isaac Ross, Wyatt Crockett and Hosea Gear. I like Sean Maitland and Robbie Freum. I think we could get a tougher game than the home unions, throw in NZ born in Riki Flutely and Dylan Hartley... I think that covers every position to a high standard, although some of the names maybe getting a bit long in the tooth.

@5Lock4ward,

I must admit from an outsider┐s perspective the way in which South African rugby administrators conduct them selves (in reference to their decision processes) seems rather detrimental to the performances of the Springboks.

Would like to offer some words of wisdom, how ever I am unable due to lack of understanding of the varies factors that would consuetude a reasonable answer.

Perhaps a few positive suggestions from yourself or other equally informed stakeholders on said topic (the topic been South Africa┐s rugby administrators and their decision making skills) could better enlighten the ill-informed.

Also I would like to see what other people think of All-Blacks selecting players who now ply their trade over seas.

Personally I think New Zealand has the depth at home to warrant this policy.

Hey 5Lock4ward, you're so smart that you came third out of three huh? Clear to me which policy's working but if you wanna pick from the slow coaches who go north then good luck.

Stag, maybe so but youve probally heard the saying "Dont throw stones when you live in a glass house" What about the Aboriginal and Maori people are they governing their country now?

To the RSA's credit at least they have the brains to not limit themselves to only domestic based players. NZ and Australia will get there one day but until that day RSA appear the only SH nation smart enough to draw on all the players available to them.

"Brett:This is Africa! No place for sissy's." Ja, rugga68, and no place for people for brains. What presently is occuring is idiotic, not only with a player conditioning programme that contravenes an agreement with the players, but the entire management set-up from SARU's Oregan Hoskins to Peter de Villiers. For all to see these individuals are nothing more than bush-league and what they've created is an Africa-style shambles.

With management like this, the Boks should be allowed to play with 16 players in the RWC. Fair is fair. We are disabled.
