Peter de Villiers: Out of the pot and into the fire

It seems Peter de Villiers just doesn't know when to keep quiet following the latest outburst from the Bok coach for his "100 per cent" support of accused murderer and Bulls prop Bees Roux.

Roux has been charged with beating a police officer to death in Pretoria last week and has claimed he was acting in self-defence because he was being robbed. The 29-year-old is on bail and has been granted leave by the Bulls.

Speaking at a media gathering ahead of Saturday's showdown with Australia in Bloemfontein, De Villiers could be facing a disciplinary hearing after he showed solidarity towards Roux.

De Villiers, while not condoning the action, told journalists that the matter had been discussed within the national team context and that it was a "tragic" affair.

"We definitely talked about Bees in a team context," said De Villiers.

"We feel for all South Africans and especially rugby players because a situation like this can happen to anybody. It is a tragic situation and we wish it on nobody.

"The team supports him 100 per cent, not on the deed but rather on the circumstances that led to the situation developing."

De Villiers' comments have reportedly left the South African Rugby Union (SARU) fuming and the outspoken Bok coach could now face a charge of bringing the game into disrepute which might threaten his job.

"I have no comment to make at this stage, but I have seen the comments Peter made," SARU president Oregan Hoskins told timeslive.co.za.

"I want the team to focus on Saturday's Tri-Nations game against Australia in Bloemfontein."

Last month, De Villiers was in the dock a few weeks ago after suggesting New Zealand had received preferential treatment from referees but escaped any penalties at a SANZAR disciplinary hearing.

A shame, When he seemed to have turned a corner as well..

Boks looking more like the Boks of old and PDV out of the headlines

for foot in mouth issues and in there for the appropriate reasons..

Have to wonder with this guy how good is his understanding of the English language? Is it not his 2nd language?

as an all black fan i can't stand PdV's selfish approach to this years poor show in the tri nations by SA, but even i can see that the media has just jumped on the whole "What silly thing is PDV gunna say next?" bandwagon... and murdered him again for it, (excuse the pun)..

he should be punished just to shut him up and get him on with his job, but not crucified and sacked from his role...

I'm afraid that PDV has really blown it this time.

I fail to see how he could be aware of "the circumstances that led to the situation developing".

Let the Law take its course.

Nice to see some debate on this, some interesting points raised in PDV's defence but given his history of making gaffes he should have kept his trap shut. His statement was unprompted by anyone in the media and if you don't know the facts then say nothing. PDV has been proven to be completely unfounded in most of his statements, he should not sully South African rugby further because that's all he is doing, making them a laughing stock. This incident alone is not enough to justify his dismissal but, taking his track record into account, he should be packing his bags. Sadly he'll just be the latest in a line of acrimonious dismissals, SARU need to take a look at how they select and support their head coach in future.

I see nothing wrong with this statement.

The article title is clearly editorialized, his quote was taken out of context.

I am no PDV fan and I think he is a idiot, but I am on his side on this one. If your friend or family member was in this situation, or even further, was convicted of murder, chances are you wouldn't dissown or abandon them, be saddened and disappointed yes, but still support them with what they are going through.

PDV is stupid, but he is not wrong on this one.

Agree with Justice 4 all here, media jumping on the bandwagon of PVD and his "mis-interpretations/Quotes" of his second language. I can see a book and movie deal in here !!!! Not Disneyland Justice 4 all, more like Hollywood

Boks should wear "Justice 4 PVD" armbands this weekend !!!! naaa, that would just look stupid, LOL

Hang on guys, I'm not sure what PDV is supposed to have done wrong here. I don't like PDV as a coach and I wish we would replace him for his coaching failures, but remember this. Bees Roux is innocent until proven guilty. PDV is not condoning the alleged beating of the policeman, but is talking about the effect on his team of having, for some players, a friend and team mate in a situation where he is accused (not convicted!) of murder. As far as I can tell from the few reports I have read, PDV, in his bumbling style, merely said that he didn't condone the alleged act of violence (so far so good, right?) but that the circumstances leading up to the alleged act could happen to anyone i.e. a supposed mugging that led to violent resistance (quite true in the South African context, I believe. I haven't lived there for nearly 40 years, but I can name 23 people who I know well enough to invite for a beer and who have been murdered and many others who have been assaulted, mugged, held up at gun point, shot at, or raped....this isn't Disneyland folks....this is Africa, and life is tough and sometimes cheap.

Jawdropping - and not in the good way.

PdV definitely doesn't know that 'mouth' is something you can keep shut without any particular harm.
