It is unlikely that Springbok coach Peter de Villiers will make major or indeed any changes to the Springbok side, despite a disappointing performance at the weekend, for the Tri-Nations Test against Australia in Bloemfontein next Saturday.
The Springboks defeated Australia 44-31 in Pretoria after a poor first half performance and a gutsy but average show after the break against a Wallaby side that squandered too many opportunities to be termed unlucky.
Despite De Villiers' admittance that there are a number of players who have far exceeded the ideal of 1,600 playing minutes per year, captain John Smit, wing Bryan Habana and the country's third centurion, Victor Matfield, will most probably play in the Boks' final 2010 Tri-Nations Test.
"Yes, they are a bit overplayed," De Villiers said. "All those minutes playing and training get to the legs, so we need to manage them."
De Villiers made it clear that rest "won't be forced" on the players -and despite more than 6,300 training minutes in the Super 14 and 1,000 in preparation for Test matches, they will probably run on the field again.
Habana in particular is as far as he could be from the player who became the darling of South African rugby with his speed and try-scoring ability, and on Saturday presented the Wallabies with two tries in addition to other blunders.
His work rate, probably his greatest asset, is down and it would be to his advantage if one of the younger wings such as Lwazi Mvovo, Gerhard van den Heever or Bjorn Basson got a run in his place.
Gio Aplon, of course, after Friday night's good showing for Western Province, despite their loss, should be the front-runner for the spot after some solid performances in the Bok jersey to date.
John Smit is also not nearly the player he should be, and it would be a courageous and wise move from De Villiers to let Chiliboy Ralepelle start in his place.
He was, after all, quite impressive when he replaced Smit on Saturday. Whether De Villiers and his management team should be led by what the players want, and not what they probably need, is a moot point.
Matfield, for example, on Friday said he just "wanted to play rugby. I'll play another 10 Tests if needed this year," he said. But will that be to the team's long term advantage?
These three senior players, as well as others like Morne Steyn, Gurthro Steenkamp, Pierre Spies and Schalk Burger might get their rest when the Boks tour the UK on a Grand Slam tour including a match against the redoubtable British Barbarians at the end of the year.
Smit, on the South African Rugby Union's fan forum BOKzine, admitted there is a possibility that he and some of the other senior players would be rested for the tour, but added that it was still to be decided.

@boysinblue only time the abs play an abs 2nd team for this EOYT will be against Scotland. Abs will play their best against the rest. So don't worry it'll be money well spent.

@apuula: I'm sure they will be fine, its just when you spend ¿100 on a ticket to a match, you'd like to see their A team, no matter how strong the reserves are! Not much satisfaction in competing with, and even beating, the AB 2nds......

@ boysinblue abs haven't lost an EOYT game since Egland in 2002, they also haven't conceded a try in 3 years, so I'm sure they'll be fine.

I agree with Imamba, if they don't use the Nov. tour to develop some depth they'll pay the price at the RWC. Thinking that Smit, Habana and Matfield have enough left in the tank to do a Nov. tour, finish out the Currie Cup, play a full season of Super Rugby followed by RWC warm ups, the next 3N and then go into the RWC ready to go...well that's just madness. Some of the players on the last RWC championship side would be, in my humble opinion, lucky to be on the Nov. tour due to form anyhow, let alone any of the Boks teams going forward.

Even if the Boks send a weaker team up North in November, it will give the newer boys a chance to show their stuff and the guys who've played their guts out till now should get a well deserved rest. PDV should "force" rest on those who obviously need it.

Looks like yet another depleted Boks squad heading up North in November. Hopefully the All Blacks won't let us down too.......

Pleeez PDV, use your brains. Give Spies, Matfield, Smit and Habana a rest. For crying out loud, can't you see Habana especially needs a break and to play himself back into form in the Currie Cup?

Yeah, the Boks were abysmal. Only scoring 20 points to the three the Wallabies scored in the second half. Was truly an average performance by them. The Boks were certainly under the cosh in the first 15 with Habana giving gifts, but after John's talk after the third Wallaby try they certainly sharpened up. They used both rush and drift defence effectively. Let's not forget that the try JP scored started in the Boks' half. The Wallabies were good value for their money and tried, almost successfully, to ambush the Boks by playing an ultrafast game. It failed, and though there are still improvements and personnel changes to be made, the Bokke certainly won this match as opposed to the Aussies losing it. As Gary Player said,"The harder you work, the luckier you get". Give cedit, where credit is due. Both teams came out to play some rugby and in the end rugby won.

Not forgetting Bryan Habana's great performances that led to him being nominated international player of year and other awards, the fact is that he is now a liability and needs to go until the spark returns. His performance on Saturday was dismal. It put the Boks under the cosh and could have cost them this game.
Despite Victor Matfield's words about being able to play another ten tests this year, he probably does not appreciate that being over-played dulls the spark that both Juan Smith and Derick Hougaard demonstrated so admirably last Saturday.
As to Peter de Villiers statement that rest won't be "forced" on players, so much for his ideas about managing players! Totally out to lunch!
