The most talked-about name in New Zealand sport at the moment is set to burst onto the international scene this November.
Mention a certain rugby player to fans in New Zealand, Australia or France and you're sure to set off either a tirade of criticism or plethora of praise. Yet elsewhere he has hardly been heard of. That will all change this November - of that you can be sure.
Funny story: I found myself at a rather large braai in Pretoria just before the Tri-Nations made it's visit to the Highveld this year. With the soccer World Cup having ended not long before, there was a pretty eclectic bunch of characters in attendance. Most will remember the afternoon for one Frenchman's hilarious garden cricket debut but the real international fireworks were still to follow.
As so often is the case, conversation around the fire turned to that ever-evolving 'who is the top ->insert position here
"Sonny Bob wie?" was the grumbled response from one local, resplendent in his Blue Bulls kit, who clearly thought these kids had experimented with one klippies and coke too many. Needless to say the ensuing 'debate' was animated.
Sonny Bill Williams: 1.93m (6 ft 4 in), 108 kg (17 st) - those numbers are almost identical to another superathlete, Springbok number eight Pierre Spies, except Williams normally wears a thirteen on his back.
For the uninitiated, here's a quick recap. A former New Zealand rugby league international, SWB made headlines when he walked out of his contract with Australian NRL side the Bulldogs and headed to France to join up with Tana Umaga at Toulon in France. Two seasons later he was named in the Top 14 Dream Team, but had already returned to New Zealand, signing for Canterbury with an eye on the World Cup. Chuck in a couple of exhibition boxing matches, mix it all up with a 'skiing while injured' saga and you have the makings of a media magnet.
On Sunday, having made a only handful of appearances in the ITM Cup, Williams was included in the All Blacks squad to travel North at the end of the month.
And so the trouble started (or continued, depending on who you ask). It seems there are plenty of folk in New Zealand who reckon he's all tell and no show, a show boater built up by the press who doesn't fit the All Blacks mold.
The reaction from some fans in New Zealand has included an in-depth explanation on how one breakfast did a U-turn at the stomach such was the disgust at the 'cheapening' of the All Black jersey. Some true cynics have even suggested Sonny Bill's place in the squad was silently guaranteed as soon as he signed a domestic contract.
Not much of a fan of League, I didn't know much about SWB before his move to France but after the first time I had the pleasure of watching him play for Toulon, I realised what all the fuss was about.
Williams is the rugby player of the future, a physical monster with ball skills to boot. Big rugby players are no novelty - France wing Aurélien Rougerie is a similar size and no one needs reminding of how devastating Jonah Lomu was with ball in hand and a bit of space to work with. But Williams' athletic ability could just set new benchmarks of what is possible. He floats like a butterfly and stings like a lumberjack.
"His offloading is unbelievable," according to Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder.
"He has a skill set that rugby players in New Zealand do not possess yet. He can step around you, step through you or offload. He will attract defenders and create space for other players," the former All Black skipper told The Australian.
"He must have been well coached in Toulon. He has come on in leaps and bounds."
But is there a place for him in the All Blacks team? Many a punter will tell you that he shouldn't be in squad, at least not yet and not ahead of Canterbury team-mate Robbie Fruean.
Graham Henry certainly has no reason to want to drop Conrad Smith, who has been simply outstanding for the men in Black all season. Despite what cynics have suggested, Henry is not one to hand out black jerseys cheaply (just ask Colin Slade or Victor Vito.) You don't have the best record of any coach at Test level without an eye for talent. Besides, if Willimas isn't tested at international level now, there won't be much chance before the World Cup.
Just the thought of Williams running at a hole punched into a defensive line by Ma'a Nonu must send chills down the spines of the awaiting northern hemisphere midfielders. If you like your stats, try these numbers on for size (excuse the pun). Nonu + Williams = 218 kg.
Of course the option of pairing Williams with Smith also exists, or even bringing either of them on as a game breaker in the last twenty minutes.
Either way, his presence creates competition for places in the starting line-up, which is good for any team.
Contrary to what many detractors have claimed, Blackadder believes Williams will assimilate into the All Blacks' culture, describing him "modest and humble," in contrast to the effect similar media hype has had on other players. (No, by all accounts Sonny Bill won't be ballroom dancing any time soon.)
All of the above said, it's understandable how fast-tracking Williams' into the national side has left a bitter taste in a few mouths. He will have a lot to prove on tour.
The jury is out: Is Williams hot stuff or just the product of hot air? Test rugby is the ultimate testing ground, so we'll find out in November.

So he might play for Ozz or NZ? Has he got a Scottish granny? Blackadder is a hugely repected figure; because he says so I want to see the bloke play..and I'm English!
Lomu played in a few losing sides - rugby will always be a team game.

What team in the world wouldn't give SBW a run in their team to see what damage he can do. Wise move by Henry and co . I suspect a run in off the bench ant Twickers.
@Trinats If you look at your post you will notice in all those tackles SBW took the hit and the BaBas retained possession . He got up smiling . I suspect you'd give him a run in your team too given half a chance ?

He'll make this EOYT much more interesting, the same way he's made the ITM cup exciting. Because when this guy gets the ball - you get excited - he makes stuff happen out of nothing. It's a quality Israel Dagg showed off this year as well. The Crusaders backline for the S15 is going to look very intimidating, I think they'll be back on top next season. Exciting times for a NZ supporter :) SBW may turn out to have low impact initially, but NO NZ player since Lomu has gotten this much hype early on in their career.

Ah, missed the 'still playing' part. But don't tell me you've forgotten Robinson stepping past Latham on the Lions tour in 2001, or have you blocked it out? ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-bgKkO0KmA

Cross was a good player going forward and like sbw great off load. But lacks in running defensive moves (maybe the league coming out, or inexperience?).
lawynd:
Good point, but "still playing", as in union. Lote is now playing for the Kangaroos. He is missed, but also think he was wasted on the wing should have got a run at No.13
Jason Robinson was an exciting player to watch but only looked like he was ever going sideways with his runs, to be honest i never saw much of him V the weaker nations where he might have looked good.

Trinats, what about Lote Tuqiri? He didn't spend a huge amount of time in league before crossing over but has been a success in both codes, and only alleged personal issues kept him out of the Wallabies recently (just a note that at Leicester he was fantastic and worked really hard - I find it hard to believe some of the rumours about him as a result). Also, what about Jason Robinson?

Trinats, Ryan Cross? He had a fairly quiet Super 15 last year, but I would say he qualifies as a 'true convert'.

KiwiLad,
They wouldn't, why do you think he went to you !!!! He even got turned down for the Kangaroos.
Gaisner (another league player, went to France also) didn't even get a look in and he was rated higher than SBW. Also watch as he steps up too fast in defence, attackers are able to run around him or create a gap for a runner with an inside channel.
League players find it difficult with less room. We have had our fair share since professionalism and most have failed, Matt Rodgers wasn¿t too bad but he grew up playing union. The only true convert (still playing) is Brad Thorn, and he would get selected in the current wallabies.

I can't wait to see him play in an All Black jersey.
Personally, I see him as a "last 20 minutes" player - he'd guarantee at least a couple of tries against tired defenders.

Sonny Bill coming on against a tiring defense is going to be devastating - his offloading game is completely unique - he scored a try against otago a few weeks back by throwing a backhand dummy. Because he is able to clinically offload this way it was enough for the defender to hold back and allow him to score the try. Blackadder is right about the skillset.

I am very excited to see SBW in an AB jersey...true that if you checklist his progression against past AB players it is unorthodox, but such is the way nowadays. I've only seen him in a few clips, but as the report says, this guy is light on his toes for such a big and powerful bloke...it frightens me watching him run at people, so god knows what they'd be thinking if the mate inside them has just had to try and contain Nonu or Smith. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be a Gavin Henson / Danny Cipriani (I'm a Pom in Oz) and that he focuses on delivering the goods on the field and not off it...

yes he is that good. he is almost as big as Lomu, and in my opinion more skilful, fends off plenty of forwards...and reads the game a bit better. Teamed up with Fruean in the ITM cup they have been lethal.
the guy is a freak.
the problem is who do you drop to make room for him?! Nonu is awesome and Smith is all class...good dilemma to have...

As classy as Smith and Nonu are.. and as much as i love their respective skillsets, SBW has so much potential in him it should be illegal. All greats must be displaced at their throne (while the young guns endure the hate and ill wishes of the traditionalists that think their heros are immortal) SBW will claim and cement his place in the NZ midfield, sooner rather than later in my opinion.. The All Blacks have got to keep moving forward, especially with their players, if they want to keep up this dominance..

hahah I can just imagine some enormous Bulls supporter with his belly stretching the blue jersey out, dressed in horns and a nose ring....like an angry extra from a Jenny Craig advertisement.... Sonny Bill Who - he asks? Another couple of months will answer his question nicely. The Bulls ruled the last couple of 'kick and chase' years of S14 - with rugby alive with running now the likes of SBW will run straight over the hearts of these of fellas
