Romania s players celebrate

Going to the World Cup: Romania

This week we will mostly be concerning ourselves with minnows, record-breakers, travesties, the north-south divide and a first World Cup prediction...

The result of the weekend? Australia's sensational second half against France? New Zealand's gritty resolve against Wales? South Africa's bounce back from Edinburgh's disappointment?

All have their merits. But in case anybody didn't notice, the final World Cup spot was determined this weekend, as Romania smashed Uruguay 39-12 in Bucharest on Saturday.

A closer game was expected after the tight 21-21 draw in Montevideo a fortnight ago, but in front of a crowd that bordered on the rabid at times Romania were good value for their win, which preserves their 'ever-presents' status at all World Cups since the tournament's inception. They scored five tries, including an early penalty try that was the turning point of the game, while Uruguay could only muster two second-half efforts after the game was done and dusted.

The Romanians join a tough pool, featuring England, Scotland, Argentina and Georgia, a pool in which the forward contests will be immense in every game.

"It is a hard job that we start now, the hardest job starts now," said coach Romeo Gontineac.

"We will try to construct a very competitive team for the World Cup. This team that played today and the group we have, hopefully we will have 50 players until the summer to make a very good squad for the World Cup.

"I feel like I am flying now, it feels very good. It is a pleasure being a coach to see the team play exactly as you train them, to the game plan. I am glad and I congratulate the boys, they had a very good game. All of them, the 22 that we had today and the other guys in the 31 that stayed together, I congratulate all of them."

And for Uruguay, whose squad's average age was considerably younger than that of their hosts?

"It was one step too far. It was not our moment. We have a young team that needs some more international competition and needs to keep on working like this and maybe the next one," said coach Gonzalo Camardon.

Elsewhere in the 'second division' of internationals this week, there was controversy galore in Tblisi as Georgia scored an 89th-minute try to overcome the USA 19-17.

In fact it seems Georgia have had the rub of the green two weeks running, with their narrow win over Canada the week before also tinged with mites of controversy.

Legit or not, one thing's for sure, the other members of Georgia's pool will not be looking forward to facing these lelos one bit come next September. And it seems that should you be unlucky enough to have to got to Tblisi, you will not be able to buy a win

As for the controversy, we'll let you decide...

- v Canada

- injury time win v USA

Congratulations also go to Dan Carter, who became - officially and in all columns and with all questions about Lions tours answered and everything - the wold record Test points scorer of all time.

He also completed another challenge last week in the run-up to the Scotland game. In training, he and a couple of others were challenged by Adidas to punt the ball onto the crossbar from 40m...

Well, could you?

________________________________________________________________________

Out comes the shortlist for the IRB player of the year and now on and on the debate rages. Of the published list - Matfield, McCaw, Pocock, Harinordoquy, Muliaina and Beale - the obvious choice is McCaw once again.

But in a year where Carter broke the afore-mentioned points record and Will Genia exploded onto the scene, we found Kurtley Beale's name up there something of a surprise, being as he spent a fair part of the year wondering where his best position was.

Injuries and missed Tests notwithstanding, the omission of Juan Smith was however disappointing. Twice our man of the match for the Boks this November and a one-club/province man his entire career, added to Smith's attention to quiet determination and ceaseless graft for his teams and you have a man who pretty much epitomises what rugby ought to stand for at every turn.

Both Cheetahs and Boks were left scrabbling around for vastly inferior replacements for a couple of months earlier this year when Smith's father passed away, an event that left Smith distraught. The lift to both sides when he returned was tangible.

Victor Matfield's reputation precedes him, but is there anyone who would deny had a dip in form during the Tri-Nations? Beale has impressed on several occasions, but can be infuriatingly inconsistent. Not Smith on either count. It's a bad call to leave him off.

________________________________________________________________________

Punditry and incisive analysis award of the week goes to the BBC's Jonathan Davies, whose appraisal of why the Welsh could not even create a meaningful crack in the New Zealand defensive wall, while the All Blacks seemed able to run through the Welsh at will, was nothing short of spot on.

"There's nobody running straight, nobody cutting back and nobody running an unders line to keep the All Black defence from drifting," he said, adding that "whenever New Zealand get the ball they run straight, keep the Welsh defence tied in and use the space outside."

He could have been commenting on any of the three Tri-Nations teams against their northern counterparts this weekend past though; Australia's demolition job of the French defence was entirely due to the Wallabies' ability to run straight and handle faster while South Africa did create far more chances to score than England, even if their handling was not up to scratch.

Northern hemisphere coaches need to have a look at that. At the moment, they are streets behind.

________________________________________________________________________

So the World Cup pools are sorted, and the race to be the guy who gets the predictions right is upon us.

So here goes:

Pool A - New Zealand, France, Tonga, Canada, Japan: Winners - New Zealand, Runners-up - France

Pool B - Argentina, England, Scotland, Georgia, Romania: Winners - England, Runners-up - Scotland

Pool C - Australia, Ireland, Italy, Russia, USA: Winners - Australia, Runners-up - Ireland

Pool D - South Africa, Wales, Fiji, Samoa, Namibia - Winners - South Africa, Runners-up Wales

Quarter-finals:

Australia v Wales - Australia
England v France - England
South Africa v Ireland - South Africa
New Zealand v Scotland - New Zealand

Semi-finals:

Australia v England - England

South Africa v New Zealand - New Zealand

Final:

England v New Zealand - ???

If NZ don't lose any star players and refs who can call it at least 50/50, you'd assume they'll take it.

SA to batter their way to the title if they get a real coach, and that looks unlikely ...

so has to be Aus (ultimate team mentality) or Eng (underestimated as always).

NZ are showponies, great to watch, but never gritty enough when it really matters.

"Neat vision" from your one eye !! You need peripheral, just like in Hong Kong you rattled off the above and didn't see it coming, I tried to warn you. As I did with the saffas last year.

However I would like to correct you on the "developing a major addiction to Bundaberg rum" too late on that one mate !!!! I'll bring a bottle or 7 over.

Marry Christmas

PS you should ask santa for a world cup trophy next year !!!

Trinats...I see the same final, although the result is vastly different...

I see a Wobbly prop in the bin...

I see the wobblies missing kicks from all over the park...

I see Quade the burglar ushering a number of Abs through the 10 channel to score, and DC not missing a shot at goal...

I see Jerome Kaino walking over the top of Rocky Invisible...

Still struggling with how much damage SBW is going to do to your lightweight midfield off the bench...

And Maa will have burst through that same midfield at will prior to SBWs inclusion, slipping in passes to Kieran Reid and slick flicks to Conrad Smith

I see King Richie being hailed as the true champion of the game that he truly is.

But it will not matter because it was your B team and we are a pack of cheats and plagiarise the Pacific Islands.

I see you gaining 37 kilos eating a huge humble pie whilst developing a major addiction to Bundaberg rum.

Neat vision aye bro

Merry Xmas....

SA, NZ or England (with Johnny) to win the WC. OZ have young talented players but they havnt won a major tournament in almost 10 years. Need to improve the scrum, need to find a good goal kicker, need to find a better captain. Im not convinced Elsom is the right man to lead them, mortlock back at 2nd-five next year? Not sure they can win without him, plus he kicks goals. Im expecting the boks to bounce back hard and they will be up there as favs with the ABs to win. France may cause another upset in the play-offs but will not win the WC

In a year time everything will change again. All previous World Cups have proved that. Besides, many top teams are still over-reliant on a couple of players. Lose them and it is a different story. Everybody will have the same preparation time before the World Cup, so the fitness level should be the same across all teams. Cohesion might be better in some teams, unless they have not tested their depth. Daniel Braid proved that you cannot replace McCaw at will, and it is not the only case. Robby Deans has been wise to bring on so much youth so early on.

i think the only team that may win besides NZ is SA. Aus and ENg dont have enough talent to go all the way to the final AND win it. France could have upset NZ AGAIN but i dont hink they will make it that far to get there to upset NZ, they will be knocked out by Eng or Aus before that. NZ must surely win this time! I think their biggest threat will be SA, and dont discount SA. Althought their year was bad, they have enormous depth and arent afraid of NZ like everyone else!

KubilaKhan says...

A: New Zealand 1 and France 2

B: England 1 and Scotland 2

C: Australia 1 and Ireland 2

D: South Africa 1 and Wales 2

Quarter-finals:

Australia v Wales - Australia

England v France - England

South Africa v Ireland - Ireland

New Zealand v Scotland - New Zealand

Semi-finals:

Australia v England -???

Ireland v New Zealand -???

Either final would be great, I really can't make a prediction though. Obviously with NZ Ire, I am leaning towards the AB's but Ireland is one of those teams that has moments such brilliance/luck that i can't call it. Aus and England, tooo big to call-There is a lot of history there.

England will win.. 3-4 years ago we sent a cr*p team to the world cup & we still got to the final, now we've got a half decent one... so we'll go all the way.

Anybody can win its a tournament, why does everyone get so worked up about a world cup anyway?

'The Rugby Experiment' novel addresses the same question, & takes it to a new level. (Even if the editing lets it down in places) Its a very thought provoking novel. If you really are intrested in rugby or any sport for that matter read it!!

The Wallababies are talking a big game but many doubts as to whether they have the depth and can string together enough wins to get to semis. A shallow pool will guarantee a quarter final appearance but nothing more. Easy pools have a converse side also.

Can't wait!

England!!!!?!?!?!? They wont beat France, let alone the Wallabies... God help us if England make the finals again because they haven't got a hope in hell of beating the All Blacks (or the Boks for that matter).

All Blacks v Wallabies !

Posted 09:25 29th November 2010

Trinats says...

Australia v Wales - Australia

Scotland v France - Hard to call this far out. (Scotland, not because they just beat South Africa, they also beat England and Argentina (in Argentina) this year.

South Africa v Ireland - South Africa

New Zealand v England - New Zealand

Semi-finals:

Australia v Scot/Fra - Australia

South Africa v New Zealand - New Zealand

Final:

Australia 38 v 22 New Zealand

(not because the kiwis will CHOKE, but because Wallabies are on the up, and the Kiwis have peaked and heading on the downward)

(Or because they had a huge game against the boks and Wallabies cantered into the final using B and C sides)

Or they just choke !

Spot on with the Smith call - the guy is probably the most underrated, yet influential player for his sides in the S14 and on the international stage. Do think that Matfield did have a shout though. The player of the year is based on all performances and Matfield captained his Bulls to an absolute demolition job in the S14... that has to count for something. Now for predictions:

A: 1 - Fra 2 - NZ

B: 1 - Eng 2 - Arg

C: 1 - Aus 2 - Ire

D: 1 - SA 2 - Wal

Aus vs Wal - Aus

SA vs Ire - SA

Eng vs Nz - NZ

Fra vs Arg - Fra

Aus vs NZ - NZ

SA vs Fra - SA

NZ vs SA - NZ with injury time try to break SA hearts (mine inc.)

Now that the dust has settled on November, Planet Rugby thought it only fair to give those who starred a well-earned spot in our XV.
