Paris Sevens - Day One
Friday June 10 2005
All the action from Paris
France made it through to the Cup quarter-finals of the Paris Sevens after pulling off a remarkable win over Argentina who crashed out despite beaten Australia. France now meet South Africa, and Australia face over against Fiji. The other quarter-finals see England take on Samoa, and New Zealand play Scotland.
IRB Sevens, Paris - schedule: DAY ONE - JUNE 10: POOL A M7: New Zealand 38-10 Kenya New Zealand, the 2004/05 champions, began the Paris Sevens in familar fashion - recording three out of three to finish top of Pool A. Gordon Tietjens' men had to come from behind to beat Kenya and Samoa, but fared better against the Italians. Amasio Valence, who scored their first try of the tournament, has now drawn level with Canada's Shane Thompson at the top of the appearances rankings in playing his 46th all-time IRB Sevens event. Samoa also started well in pool A, John Schuster's men looking impressive in registering two early wins before falling to Titejens' men in a tight decider. "We haven't played well today really," said Titejens. "Credit to Samoa, they really came at us, but the guys stuck it out and in the end came back from 17-5 down. Scotland tomorrow will be the usual challenge." All Black Joe Rokocoko had a recurrence of an old injury in that last game, and his fitness will be assessed ahead of Saturday's matches. POOL B M5: England 42-5 Canada England recorded initial victories over Canada and Portugal without ever looking in total command. The first win also came at a price, though, captain Simon Amor picking up an injury that has since seen him rested as a precaution. Scotland had also prevailed against the two lower-ranked teams to set up a decider with England, which Mike Friday's men won to book top spot in the Pool and a quarter final against Samoa. Scotland, meanwhile, face New Zealand. POOL C M3: Fiji 24-7 Tunisia Pool C saw the expected dominance of Fiji and London winners South Africa over Russia and Georgia. Neumi Nanuku and David Batiratu again looked sharp for Serevi's side, while South Africa began where they left off in London last weekend in recording their two opening wins, before eventually coming up short against the Fijians 24-19, and losing captain Pretorius to injury. Fabian Juries did, though, go past Karl Te Nana's all-time try-scoring mark, although so did Argentine Santiago Gomez Cora. Both lie on 114 tries ahead of Te Nana's 113 and only the final day will see who finishes the season as the leading try scorer of all time. "We wanted to play well after the great performance last week in London," said South Africa's Fabian Juries. "Our defence against Fiji wasn't good enough and we paid for that as we wanted to top the pool. "Being top of the try list is fantastic. I'm very proud, but Gomez Cora is also on 114. We can see tomorrow who finishes top!" POOL D M1: Argentina 12-26 France France started their home leg of the IRB Sevens series in ideal fashion with a convincing 26-12 win over fancied Argentina in the first match of day. But they then failed to take their chances against Australia and Keiran Massey galloped clear on the final whistle to stun the crowd and rob France of what had looked a possible victory and certain 14-14 draw. Australia booked the second quarter final spot from the pool by losing to Argentina by less than the 16 points difference the Pumas needed, leaving the talented Argentines facing the unfamilar surrounds of the Bowl on Saturday. We were a bit lucky to get through in the end because we lost to Argentina, but not by enough for them to go through," said Australia captain Tim Clark. "But still, at one point they were far enough ahead so we showed character to come back. "We've lost a couple of guys who gave us our pace earlier in the season. Nick Reily's success had meant he's gone on so we've got a few new, fresh guys come in and they have different things to offer." DAY TWO - JUNE 11: M25: Quarter-Final Bowl, 09:00 - Italy v Canada M29: Quarter-Final Cup, 10:28 - New Zealand v Scotland M33: Semi-Final Shield, 12:50 - Loser M25 v Loser M26 M35: Semi-Final Bowl, 13:34 - Winner M25 v Winner M26 M37: Semi-Final Plate, 14:18 - Loser M28 v Loser M30 M39: Semi-Final Cup, 15:02 - Winner M29 v Winner M30 M41: Shield Final, 15:46 - Winner M33 v Winner M34 The best value rugby tours with Gullivers Sports Travel: RBS Six Nations, Dubai and Hong Kong Sevens, Rugby World Cup 2007, Lions 2009.
