Siwundla gets his Bok call
Thursday November 11 2004
No shortage of pace and experience
Lesley Jackson and Oginga Siwundla have forced their way into the 12-man Springbok Sevens squad for the opening two rounds of the 2004/05 International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens in Dubai and George in December.
The squad was announced on Thursday, following a recent training camp in Bloemfontein. The Boland-based Jackson has been part of the SA Rugby Emerging Sevens squad for the past two seasons and makes the step up to the national team, whilst Siwundla has been rewarded after a strong showing in the trials. Meanwhile coach Paul Treu has recalled three experienced players who, due to other commitments, were last involved in the Springbok Sevens a few seasons ago - Eddie Fredericks (2000), Anton Pitout and Jaco Pretorius (both 2002). Treu said the team contained a balance of all elements required for Sevens success. "We have strong leadership, international experience, young talent and a good balance of pace, power, skill and flair to ensure that we do well," he said. "I have no doubt about our chances of victory in Dubai and George. Our focus now will be on fine tuning the game strategy so that we are ready for all opposition we may face next month," Treu said. The Dubai Sevens takes place on December 2 and 3, while the South African leg will be held in George on December 10 and 11. Springbok Sevens squad: Marc de Marigny (captain), Eddie Fredericks, Jaco Pretorius, Bennie Adams, Marius Schoeman, Jaco van Schalkwyk, Jose van Rensburg, Anton Pitout, Fabian Juries, Lesley Jackson, Mzwandile Stick, Oginga Siwundla.
