Smit 'disappointed' after Gosford win
Saturday July 17 2004
Second half leaves more questions than answers
Springbok coach Jake White and his captain John Smit on Saturday expressed their disappointment with the team's second half performance, despite South Africa recording a comfortable 38-24 victory over the Pacific Islanders in Gosford, Australia.
While the Boks completely shut out the Islanders in the first half, leading 23-0 at the break, the South Africans went to sleep in the second half and allowed their opponents in for four tries. With New Zealand up next, as South Africa move onto the Tri-Nations series, the coach and captain know that a lot of work awaits if they don't want to be embarrassed by the All Blacks in Christchurch next week. Smit made no attempt to hide his disappointment with his team's effort after the break. "We were alright in the first half, but I'm bitterly disappointed with how we performed in the second half," Smit said in his post-match reaction. "We certainly took our foot off the gas after half-time. We worked so hard on our structures and it showed in the first half when we controlled the game. But we are disappointed at having let them in for so many tries after the break," Smit said. White also talked about the disappointment of his team's letting control of the game slip. "We kept it so tight in the first half, but we became a bit too flashy after the break," White said. "This is still a very young team and they learned a valuable lesson out there today. You can't run the ball at these guys, because they will run away with you and we played into their hands," White said. |
