SRU names new non-executive board

Peter Brown among new directors

The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) has named three new non-executive directors to replace the three who resigned over the internal wrangles.

Previous non-executive directors Fraser Livingston, Andrew Flanagan and Eric Hagman resigned in protest after the departure of David Mackay as SRU chairman.

Among the new faces is former Scotland Rugby captain Peter Brown, who is joined by businessmen Allan Munro and Tom Inglis.

"We have been most fortunate," said SRU President Gordon Dixon.

"These three men not only possess significant business expertise but have also a great deal of relevant rugby experience and knowledge."

Brown captained Scotland 10 times between 1964 and 1973, and played his club rugby at Gala.

He was chairman of the Scottish Building Society from 1993-2003, and is still a non-executive director of the firm, as well as holding senior posts at other major financial companies.

He is a match and discipline commissioner for both Six Nations and Heineken Cup, and a member of the Scottish Rugby appeals panel.

Munro has been executive chairman of Stewart's-Melville FP rugby club since 2001, and is also chairman of the Edinburgh Sports Club.

Inglis has been President of Helensburgh Cricket and Rugby Football Club since 1996 and has helped the club progress from the bottom of the regional leagues to BT National League Division 3.

He was previously involved as player, committee man and president of Ayr Rugby Club.

Meanwhile, the SRU are to ask the Scottish Executive for assistance to ease the Scottish game's financial worries.

Interim Chief Executive Ian Mcleod said the financial position had been "serious".

"We have a plan for the club programme," he said.

"It's got to be financed and ring-fenced and then we have to see what we can do to take forward the pro-teams and subsequently the international side."
