Two tries in the final 16 minutes saw the Waratahs come from behind to beat the Brumbies 28-22 at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday.
The result will be music to the ears of Australian conference rivals the Reds as the standings now read Brumbies (46), Reds (44) and 'Tahs (38).
What won't sit well with Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans, however, is the news that Tatafu Polota-Nau suffered a fractured arm in the game.
That injury puts the hooker's participation in the 2013 British and Irish Lions tour in real doubt.
A well constructed score from the Brumbies was the highlight of a physical opening quarter in Sydney. Strong hit-ups from the likes of hooker Stephen Moore and number eight Ben Mowen created the space wide on the right for the visitors to stretch the defence. And from recycled ball it was captain Mowen on hand to crash over the whitewash with 20 minutes played in the match.
That score had followed a penalty apiece from Christian Lealiifano and Brendan McKibbin while the Brumbies continued to strive for territory.
It paid off too in the 35th minute when, following Matt Toomua's fine touch-finder, pressure was applied on the Waratahs in their 22. Drew Mitchell was the man to make the eventual mistake as his kick was charged down by Tevita Kuridrani, who regathered to touch down.
That score summed up a disappointing half for the Waratahs as they lost Kane Douglas in the first minute and then Polota-Nau. They had, however, posted another penalty on the half-hour when McKibbin was successful off the tee so the teams went into the break at 6-13.
Michael Cheika would have been pleased to see his side's performance lift on their return from the changing rooms as, from Brumbies replacement Pat McCabe being pinged for offside at a ruck, Wallaby Berrick Barnes had an opportunity to make it 9-13. Unfortunately for the home side though, Rob Horne's replacement struck the upright from distance.
The Waratahs wouldn't have to wait long to trouble the scorers though as Barnes' fluid distribution came to the fore, with space found on the left touchline for Michael Hooper to race over. Barnes was on-target this time to level matters as the Brumbies struggled.
Momentum was clearly with the Waratahs and when Kuridrani was sent to the sin-bin by referee Steve Walsh for hands in a ruck, the 'Tahs were ahead for the first time in the game.
Mogg would then hit back with three penalties but when Barnes backed his pace and went over on 64 minutes before Peter Betham sliced through with only six minutes remaining, the 'Tahs held a 28-22 lead which was how it stayed despite a late surge from the Brumbies.
The scorers:

@Trader, mate it's about time the Tahs performed to their potential. While it would be nice I don't see us making the top 6, although miracles never cease.
@Ramage, very true Daryl Gibson has definitely had an impact on the Tahs performance. Having said this I sincerely believe that that Michael Cheika has been a key factor, including employing Daryl. I have and will always say this, sporting teams need leaders that inspire them and Cheika is one of those type of men.

What a bummer, I missed the game live because I went to the AFL to watch my beloved Swans draw with Freo. Watched the replay - Bloody hell, I'm in love all over again. Brumbies silenced big time.
At the beginning of the season I said Cheika would make an impact, then he threw his toys out of the cot and for a moment I wasn't sure but something inside me said he's gonna do it. The Tahs are back in town and while we may not finish in the top 6 we certainly are no longer headed for the grave yard.

As an amature student of the game am not sure why people rate MOgg so high. Two of the tries were scored without mogg in the tv picture.
its ok for a try being scored when ur out flanked, but the full back at least must lay a hand on the try scorer, after all he is the cover defence.
to me it looked as if his positional play was poor. for all the things said about cooper he is at least in the right place. (that he likes to tap people is another matter).
there was some impressive defence from both toulon and clearmont, despite the 3 tries in the game.

I did fail to point out the extent that Gibson has had on the Waratahs back play and how the Crusaders backline is not performing to the same extent as last year. Any coincidence? I believe so.

Happy for Wallaroo who stuck by the Waratahs when most of their fans did not. Well done Waratahs.
Although they probably won't win this year, they will definitely be the team to beat come next year along with the Blues and Cheetahs IMO

Wallaroo you must be basking in the sunshine after this win. As you know I am no supporter of the Waratahs but you must give credit where due, Cheika has made some considerable changes to his team which was becoming the joke of Super Rugby. He took over a dispirited rabble and has turned them into the powerful machine that they often promised to be but never delivered. White also took over a weakened franchise and has also lifted them up by the bootstraps. There the similarities end and Cheika has done this by playing a game more attuned to the Oz temperament obviously because he is an Aussie and this is where I believe White misses out. When you looked at that game you saw two different philosophies being put into practice on the field. The Waratahs tried to move the ball came unstuck at the start of the game but kept at it. The Brumbies stilted and kicking for territory and then trying to strangle the opposition. worked to begin with but the flair of the Waratahs finally overcame the regimented plan of the Brumbies. that is why I believe the Waratahs must receive credit. So for as a true supporter Wallaroo you must be very pleased. Whilst White is a good coach I do not believe he is a great coach as he is too conservative and controlling in his plan. It was about this time last year the wheels came off his campaign and it will be interesting to see whether he is more than a one trick pony. Plan A in this game never worked and there was no plan B as the robotic Brumbies had no answer to the Waratahs. Surely the ARU wont be silly enough to replace Deans, when they decide to do it, with White. Surely in McKenzie they have a home grown coach who will do the job admirably if the NSW administrators on the ARU a big enough to allow McKenzie to do so.

Wallaroo this is a Tah's side we haven't seen for a long time. Great last quarter, perhaps finally they believe in themselves and not what other people say about them. The Reds looked wonky last night, especially when under pressure, the Brumbies seemed to have become a little predictable. Probably a bit late for the Tah's but who knows, what with the break coming up for the Lions tour, we are about to enter the "silly season". Tah's in with a chance?

I don't think the wheels have come off the Brumbies, the Waratahs are just a much better team now then the start of the season. Interesting time for the Waratahs - if they get to the finals they could upset some teams...

Great work from Barnes - is he the 10 for the Lions? Folau was very quiet and was outplayed by Mogg. Are the wheels coming off for the Brumbies?
