The Stormers were denied crucial points in Melbourne on Friday as a controversial penalty try handed the Rebels a 30-21 victory at AAMI Park.
The result is the Rebels' first victory over South African opposition and leaves the Stormers' hopes of qualifying for the play-offs in tatters.
In the dying minutes, with the Stormers leading 21-10, TMO Matt Goddard chose to ignore what appeared to be a clear knock-on and instead ruled that Martin Bezuidenhout had prevented a Rebels try by holding back replacement scrum-half Nick Phipps.
And things went from bad to worse for last season's SA Conference winners as Rebels full-back Jason Woodward - who kicked 15 points - slotted a 78th minute penalty to send the Stormers back to Cape Town empty handed.
The Stormers led 14-13 at half time in a ding-dong battle that saw the lead change hands five times.
The Rebels took an 10-0 lead early on thanks to a try from close range from number eight Scott Higginbotham and a penalty from Woodward.
The Stormers closed the gap on the 15-minute mark however when scrum-half Louis Schreuder slipped out of a tackle and then zigzagged past a handful of defenders to score.
The visitors moved in front after half an hour when lock Eben Etzebeth bust clear after a pass from Elton Jantjies before finding a flying Bryan Habana up in support and the veteran wing sailed over for his first try of the season.
Joe Pietersen converted both tries but Woodward landed his second penalty on the stroke of half time to cut the deficit to a single point as the teams headed for the changing rooms.
The home side were first to strike after the break though as lock Hugh Pyle ran onto a pass from Phipps to crash over after Higginbotham broke through the middle of a ruck. Woodward added the extras to put the Rebels 20-14 up just before the hour mark.
A break from Habana was at the origin of the Stormers' third try, scored out wide by Andriess Bekker after a pass from his second row partner Etzebeth. Pietersen was on target again to put the Stormers back in front at 21-20 and set up a nail-biting final quarter.
The late drama would follow as Bezuidenhout collected a chip ahead from Higginbotham. The Rebels skipper tackled the Stormers hooker, knocking the ball forward and out of Bezuidenhout's hands in the process. Phipps hacked the ball ahead and bolted for the tryline, only to have his jersey tucked as the Stormers scrambled back.

I understand your point and people shouldn't generalise
But take a look at the Bulls/Highlander report and we can see the usual suspects jumping on the usual Kiwi whingeing/bleating bandwagon.
Funny some of them seem to be serial bleaters themselves

Well done Rebels, who would have won with or without a penalty try.

No surprise that NewJ and PhilipJ think that Cape flats joke is funny since they both quite obviously crawled out of the abortion bucket

Sorry to disappoint, will try and get in first next time. You are quite right of course there are plenty of well balanced and fair comments from SA team supporters, hell two of my best mates are from Pretoria (Bulls fans no less) and are more knowledgeable and balanced thamn most supporters you would hope to meet. All whiners are in the minority, however you don't need the stats to see that there are more from SA than the other two SANZAR countries put together. Just lets look at the games when SA sides lose viz-a-viz the Kiwi and Oz sides and I can guarantee (easy to say that, I admit I am putting nothing up) that there will be more complaints about ref's, TMO's, cheating, conspiracies etc etc from SA posters than the other two countries put together. Happy to see any stats that suggest I am wrong, I don't have to produce any to prove I am right as it is an absolute gimme.

@Mid_Coaster: I appreciate you adding 'some' to your post. The usual suspects who jump on the 'usual saffa whinging/bleating bandwagon' and completely ignore the overwhelming majority of us who see sense are really no less bigoted than bokvanmasepoes and his various manifestations. Trader always seems to be first in line but it loos like safehands beat him to it this time.

@ kakapoo. I'm not arguing against the TMOs decision or supporting a conspiracy theory as you win some and lose some and all countries and teams suffer from bad decions at times. By stating however that the TMOs decision is irrelevant as the losing margin was 9 points is illogical as the whole dynamic of the game and style was changed. When you are leading you can change your game plan and tactics to a more defensive strategy, but when you are chasing a game you may have to play more openly etc etc, all dynamics and mental attitudes change. I personally think that The Stormers made poor decisions, but the TMOS decision had to have an effect; the 9 point difference is not totally relavent.

Stormers supporters can really bitch about a loss can't they? In fact over the last couple of years a lot of SA supporters seem incapable of accepting a loss and like to blame the ref for their team's short comings...most children around the world are taught to accept the referees decisions....imo it's time for some of you to go back to school

The problem you have is that most people simply do not believe what you say about these things you say have gone against SA. That is because of all your silly name changing and ridiculous comments in the past and present. which makes it obvious that most of all these things you say that go against SA are just in your mind.
All teams from all countries have things that go for them and against them at times so why don't you stop being such a cry baby and grow up and make your mind up what your name is at the same time.

I wanted the Rebels to win and I am glad they did. The Cheetahs is my team and I adopted the Rebels as I now live in Melbourne. The penalty try though? I couldn't say with certainty that it would have been scored. Habana was not running flat out, probably because he realised Phipps was impeded, and would out sprint Phipps any day. A penalty and yellow card would have been a better outcome. Go you mighty Rebels ;)

The Stormers lost by 9 FFS! the try is irrelevant. And yes its a giant conspiracy that the IRB (run by a Frog) wants a tiny nation at the arse end of the world with less than 10% of SA's population to totally dominate the world of rugby.
Do you all realise how pathetic you all sound?

NZ must have got magically rich from knocking out children's teeth and selling them to the tooth fairy for good money. That is how they are able to pay the IRB.

@ben7
I know what sour grapes means, it means blaming a try for a 9 point loss.
It means the Stormers and their supporters not being able to suck up a loss to a team that played out of their skins

@ben7, a word of caution mate...if you are talking about the supposed forward pass JOC to Beale in the Rebels game, have a look at the sareferee web site where you will find a clear explanation of a forward pass with videos from the IRB and an endorsement by SA's finest refs that the pass to Beale was NOT forward according to the Laws of Rugby. I haven't seen this game yet, but you do realize that if the tackling player dislodges the ball in the tackle back towards the tackled player's goal line, no knock on has occurred?

@Safehands@ Did you just google SA refs and grab the first name you saw for you inane post? Please enlighten us about all decisions that have gone the way of SA over the years. Because there seems to be a helluva long list of decisions that tend to go against us, usually from Aussie and Kiwi refs. Try these words..Bryce Lawrence, Paddy OBrien, Paul Honiss, Stuart Dickinson, Steve Walsh and Keith Brown of late.

No Ben7 it was not. The TMO in that game was Steve Leszczynski. Who ws on duty in the Force Sharks game and who ruled the Force had knocked on when attacking the Sharks tryline at the end of the game.
