Ulster put in a classy performance to defeat the Scarlets 28-17 at Ravenhill on Friday, booking their spot in the RaboDirect PRO12 final on May 25.
Tries from Tommy Bowe, Robbie Diack, and Tom Court helped an industrious Ravenhill outfit secure the trip to the RDS in Dublin on May 25.
The Ulstermen, who led at half-time, were not at their fluid best, but had enough in the locker to overcome the tenacious and determined Scarlets.
The Welsh responded through Gareth Davies and Sione Timani, but ultimately were unable to match the intensity of the Irish side. Thus the first PRO12 semi was a little more one sided than anticipated. But Ulster will be exhilarated at their progress.
The home team got off to a promising start, exhibiting some efficient passing and lines of running. But the fluency of their play was hampered by some messy handling errors.
As it was, it was the Scarlets who opened the points-scoring proceedings on four minutes, through a well-taken kick by late replacement, Owen Williams. Pienaar leveled the scoreline two minutes later through his trusty boot.
Williams had a golden opportunity to increase the Scarlets' advantage on 16 minutes, but his well-struck effort careered off the woodwork.
Both sides were unnecessarily impeded on 18 minutes, when Andrew Trimble and Liam Williams were yellow-carded for a scuffle. The disruption unquestionably benefited Ulster more, as the hosts camped themselves in the visiting 22. After a series of infringements, Ireland winger Bowe squeezed in at the corner on 23 minutes. Pienaar duly converted to make it 10-3.
Pienaar squandered a gilt-edged chance to extend their advantage on the half-hour mark, but miscued his kick.
Although the Scarlets were competing ferociously in every facet of the game, it was hard to resist the conclusion that Ulster were achieving ascendancy in this phase of the game. That promise was delivered on 34 minutes when South African blindside Diack crashed over for the second try of the evening. Pienaar missed the subsequent conversion, however.
The hosts' scrum was now putting the Welshmen under all sorts of pressure. One such effort extended Ulster's lead on the cusp of half-time, as Pienaar slotted a penalty on the 40-minute mark to make it 18-3. Few could deny that the Irish province, although scrappy, were well worth their lead.
The hosts started the second-half in similar vein, pressurising the Scarlets' 22. Their intensity yielded dividends on 43 minutes, when Irish international loosehead Court bulldozed over from close range. Piennar nailed the conversion, making it 25-3.
The Scarlets' effort was not assisted by a couple of injuries at the outset of the second period. The match now took on an altogether more ragged complexion, as the conditions began to deteriorate under foot. Both sets of kickers resorted to a round of territorial ping-pong. But it was the Scarlets that broke the monotony on 60 minutes when Gareth Davies elegantly danced through the Ulster cover to score.
The Welshmen undid their good work two minutes later by conceding a penalty straight in front of the Ulster posts. Pienaar punished the visitors for their profligacy to make it 28-10.
It has to be said that the Welsh visitors displayed remarkable tenacity, and definitely were the superior team in the final quarter. Replacement Timani scored a thoroughly deserved consolation on 78 minutes, with his effort being converted by Owen Williams. But the hosts clung on to secure the final berth they coveted so much.

@Norm, thanks for your kind message of support :-) I too have a good feeling about Ulster this year. The added motivation of the hurt of last year in HCup (and this year in HCup too), the fact Leinster are going to be tired, that their recent winning era is on the wane, and that a number of their players may be looking to coast through the game so as not to be injured for the flight to Oz.....
Bonne chance !!

That's a very interesting question indeed?! But I thought it was you had the multiple personality disorder. Goy says so, so it must be so surely? Good god man you surely don't think he is actually guilty of what he regularly accuses you and certain other of his detractors of? Personally I know it couldn't be so, because in a jocular fashion I did post as Leinster-Goy once and he quite rightly took me to task soundly on it!
Great game and cant wait to see the final and god willing some retribution for our schooling at Twickenham last year. Bowe is in great shape for Australia, I think he is going to star. Best? Well the lions selection just beggars belief! He was a bit wayward for a couple of the 6N games, in fact very wayward for him, but surely looking at the last 2-3 years he is the standout centre in British and Irish unions!

griffi60-'Rory Best deserves a mention, he was exceptional last night, was absolutely everywhere round the pitch, how he is not a lion is beyond me!'- Gatland is not psychic. He can only pick players that play well before he names his squad. Don't get me wrong i'd have taken best ahead of Hartley, but in all fairness, Best was rubbish throughout the 6N. Ireland had a crippling injury crisis yes, but that was actually an ideal opportunity for Best to show his leadership qualities as well as his ability to perform without being surrounded by other top draw players. He did neither.

hmmm, so how did paddy91317, at 10:58am, have time to respond to goy's post of 10:17am, when the website had not updated in between? i'm told some irishmen have the gift of the gab, but surely that's too quick.....some-one either works at PR or is talking to himself again....maybe crunchfit can explain?
watching the game back on highlights, it's hard to get a feel for the flow, but looks like Ulster were the better team by more than just the 11 point margin. next weekend they get to rest (while Leinster slay the mighty French side that is Stade Francais, 11th in T14....) so a possible Ulster-Leinster final may well go Ulster's way. one could hardly argue they wouldn't deserve it, with the season they have had. imagine if Ferris had been fit!

This idea of really big players all over the team sheet wont work against oz sure they play against south african teams week in week out down there and there bigger than we are...i have a funny feelin gatland has put all his money on plan a (run over them) i dont see a plan b in that squad

@sneggy - not sure what two tries you are talking about, the only one that went to TMO from my memory was Court's, which I think was a try and deserved benefit of the doubt. There was no debate about Diack's or Bowe's surely? I thought Rolland had a good game, very quick to blow at the breakdown which helped speed the game up. Either way, Ulster were and are the much better team and deserve to be in the final.
Rory Best deserves a mention, he was exceptional last night, was absolutely everywhere round the pitch, how he is not a lion is beyond me!

paddy91317 is spot on about davies. the man couldn't create a ham sandwich (throwing passes straight into touch) yet he's in the B&I lions squad cos "gatty" likes the wham-bam-thankyou-sam style of centre. this is a huge problem for the Lions squad: no creativity in midfield. reckon it could come back to bite us
well done ulster. looking forward to the big finale in the RDS

Good for Liams Williams, scaffolder by trade, before being picked for Rugby.
Certainly showed he was not backing down.
Cowardly attack by Trimble, Williams was on his back after the tackle.
Good to see sense prevailed over, "you started it, penalty against you".
The years of the retaliation being penalised should be over. Someone hits you, you are supposed to allow him another shot?
Rolland had a forgettable night, his Duracell TJ missed the trip that gave the position for the first try.
Hope he is better in the HC final next week!

Ulster clearly the much better team and really took their foot off the gas to allow the Scarlets a shred of dignity.
Rolland wasn't good at all but when is he!?
IMO he shouldn't have even bothered with the TMO, they were both clearly tries!
I don't see how you can award a try and then decide to go upstairs!

Rolland once again had a shocker to allow the two tries was a disgrace the TMO had no choice to back him otherwise it would have been further embarrassment for him. Ulster were the better team but you need fairness when it comes to a ref. Surely there should have been a Scottish or Italian ref doing the game and no doubt they would have done a better job.

Liam Williams takes a smack in the face from Trimble.....does he stand back and hope the ref sees it & sin bins the offender & if the ref does not penalise does Williams just think ...hey I've been punched in the face and so what ?... NO...surely. retaliation should be a lesser offence. Nobody should tolerate being attacked without defending themselves.
Le Rolland .. awful as usual ( not for this incident but for his usual & now standard ineptitude )

Great game, love a bit of argy bargy. such a shame Scarlets are gonna be effectively scrapped net year for a new bunch of lads. The pro 12 is a great competition but how can we accept the welsh teams being strip mined of their talent. The morons (BT) taking over the HC need to realise a healthy euro scene require all 3 major leagues functioning. If the English think the player drain will end here they are mistaken. The leechs are all about the welsh now but the stars of the avivia premiership are in sight.
Who wants our best being turned into mercenarys in a loveless french t14? The lions should be more than a rallying call, it should be a call to arms

Anothet comment i wanna add while im at it.... 3 loins players on the pitch tonight
Bowe-didnt have much to do but looked dangerous in attack and defense
North- disinterested and made bowe look leagues ahead of him because of it
Davies- i dont wanna troll here but im going to be honest he shouldn't be and in my opinion isnt a centre he should be a number 6 at best. i have seen better a skillset on my 4 year old daughter who can actually pass the ball off her bad hand
Honorable mention to best aswell i bet gatland is hoping one of either youngs/hartley/welsh bloke (forget his name) picks up an injury i know i am anyway

I first wanna say well done ulster differant level team compared to scarlets but i would really love to here an ulster mans point of view on this question and i mean this with nothing but respect for your team..What does paddy jackson contribute/offer to your rugby team bar fill up a jersey so you can field 15 players? If peinar dictates everything why not just play an extra centre?
