Barkley v Edinburgh

Olly Barkley: Disgruntled

Olly Barkley is sticking to his controversial remarks made in the wake of his omission from England's Elite Player squad.

Barkley was angry at what he perceived to be a preference for size over guile in the England squad and made no secret of his feelings.

"I like to think I bring something different," he said.

"A large part of my development has been the way we play at Bath, with an expansive style, and I feel I have quite a big role in that. I won't change. I am probably just not as big as the next guy who plays there so that probably doesn't help me."

Asked by The Guardian if he had changed his thoughts on Sunday, Barkley was succinct in his reply to the negative.

"I do not feel I spoke out of turn," he says.

"I was asked questions about what I could offer at twelve and I answered honestly.

"I was asked about how I felt the defence went in Australia and I answered honestly. I did not stab anyone in the back. I said that if I was not picked in the Test side that was the prerogative of the coaches and I did not throw my toys out of the pram.

"I am philosophical about things. I am 28 and have had enough bumpy rides to know that you have to get on with life.

"I had no idea I was going to be left out of the two senior squads and I have to concentrate on playing for Bath: it is not about proving a point but being true to myself and making sure we get what we deserve this season.

"I am never going to kiss England goodbye: I am not that narrow-minded. But it is quite clear I do not figure in their plans at the moment."

Barkley was omitted ostensibly because he did not impress Martin Johnson on the tour to Australia in June, with Johnson not specifying publicly what he had done wrong.

"There are areas of his game he needs to work on and he is fully aware of what they are," he said.

"He is under no illusions. International rugby is different to the Premiership: if you are not performing well you will be exposed."

Riki Flutey and Shontayne Hape are now Johnno's preferred weapons of choice at twelve, with Flutey a similar type of player to Barkley but with Barkley hinting that Johnson might have told him privately to buck up on defence.

"There is a perception that I don't defend very well, but my statistics are good and I relish tackling," Barkley says.

"I do not shirk, but it seems to be something that is brought up time and again. I have to attend to it. I spoke to Martin Johnson after the squads were announced and he said I needed to improve in certain areas."

Barkley at least now has the benefit of having one of Johnson's former mentors, Ian McGeechan, in charge of things at Bath. McGeechan, who made Johnno the captain of his victorious Lions tour to South Africa in 1997, is eager to help Barkley find his way back into the reckoning.

"What I can do is talk to the national management and find out what we need to be doing for him to be considered seriously by England," said McGeechan.

Whether that involves keeping quiet remains to be seen.

BathSimon, I hear you about Sheridan's lack of game time after the injury and about Shaw's age. I thought you were approaching the selection as if the players were all healthy and fit. Grewcock is a big boy, I just think he's a red card waiting to happen. But he's a great lock, no question about it. I will be following Bath this year now that they've brought Simon Taylor into the squad and from the looks of it will let him play in the back row. I also am a Luke Watson fan and think he was hard done by in South Africa. Say you wouldn't know how I could come across a Bath jersey with a Scotland flag in the middle chest and Taylor's number on the back would you? Impossible to find online.

4lockforward, i would have picked Sheridan. i am a big big fan of him. but he hasent played alot of rugby last season. and he dosent stay in form all year round. i am also a big fan on Shaw but i thought he might be a little to old. its funny Johno would pick Danny Grewcock he was in fine form at the end of last season. It would have been a superb lock combination 2 proper bastards in the front dogging it out, but unfortunately i think there a little too old. Yes Vickery is but hes had some good games last season and i dont think Dan Cole is world class at the moemeant nore Davey Wilson both qaulity tightheads though and our future tight heads.

ok.... so here it goes revised

BathSimon, I think you're darn close to what their game-day 22 should look like. I just don't know if I can go w/ Varndell. I think you'd have to give it to Monye, Ashton or Strettle. I'm not sure about Tindall either; I'd say Hipkiss just to blood some youth. I'd also put Haskell at 8 and bring in Croft at 6 for his work rate, ball running and line-out capabilities. Tough call leaving Simon Shaw out and pretty harsh to leave Sheridan out all together. I'm with you 100% as far as England only using homegrown players, the clubs should be doing the same thing.

England needs Barkleys attacking game. He is a better ball carrier and he can break out of tackles alot better then Shontane Hape and Shane Geraghty. I dont think that England should use foreign players as they will stop players like Barkley playing for England. He is a much better kicker, tackler, ball carier and runner them both of other players put together. He should have had started instead of Shontane Hape (as much as i like him) Hape shouldnt play for England. Just like Dan Ward-Smith, Lesley Vinakolo, Henry Paul, Riki Flutey and theres more that i cant name at the top of my head. Stick to English home grown players and none of these quick buck foreign players. We have alot of young talent such as Mr. Barkley, Matthew Tait, Dom Wauldoc, Toby Flood, Ben Youngs even Tom Varndell. Please Johno pick the younger blokes instead. How would of felt if you hadent got picked and there was a kiwi like oh Frank Bunce (in your time) played for England instead of you.

Johnno keeps proving my point for me, that the use of SH players is ruining the NH game. If those players weren't good enough to get into the AB's then they aren't good enough to help beat the AB's. I like Barkley better than both of them anyhow. Johnno's poor selection policy will be England's and thus his undoing.
