Wales trio in doubt for Romania
Tuesday November 09 2004
Jones, Williams and Cockbain unlikely to play
Wales look certain to be without the services of at least three players for their Test against Romania at Millennium Stadium on Friday night. Wing Shane Williams, lock Brent Cockbain and number eight Ryan Jones are all nursing knocks sustained during Wales' 38-36 defeat against Tri-Nations champions South Africa over the weekend. Wing Hal Luscombe and prop Adam Jones are also suffering minor niggles ahead of the Test. "All three (Williams, Cockbain and Ryan Jones) are currently doubtful, given the quick turnaround for the next game," said Wales physiotherapist Mark Davies. "We are reviewing their progress regularly. "All things considered, Saturday's game proved robust and physical as expected, and as a consequence, many of the lads are nursing minor bumps and bruises which should all resolve themselves over the course of the week. "Brent sustained a shoulder injury, and is not going to take an active part in training this week. We are looking to get him fit with a view to the New Zealand match in 10 days time." Davies added: "Shane hyper-extended his knee in the latter stages of Saturday's international, and he is sitting out training for the next three or four days to allow that to settle down. We will then review the injury. "Similarly, Ryan took a heavy blow to his leg at the tail-end of the game. "He is currently undergoing treatment, and he will resume non-impact activities as the week goes on. We will decide on his fitness in the next 24 hours." In Cockbain's anticipated absence, 6ft 10in Newport Gwent Dragons lock Luke Charteris could be handed a first Test match start. He went on as a second-half substitute against South Africa. Romania are the second of Wales' opponents in the November, with New Zealand to follow next Saturday, followed by Japan six days later.
